Syracuse, NY Snows Into The Lead in Golden Snowball Snow Contest
Congrats to Syracuse on slipping past Buffalo and Rochester the last couple of days. All of the cities were pretty far behind what their normal average snowfall should be for this time in the season.
Syracuse broke a date snow record for today already with 8.8 inches of snow being reported so far beating the old record of 5.9 inches which goes back to 1951. That was enough snow to put Syracuse in the lead in the National Golden Snow Globe snow contest also. Erie, PA was winning the National snow contest which is for the bigger cities with a population of 100,000 or more as of the 2010 census. I think we are going to see a lot of lead changes this snow season and it looks like Buffalo is ready to join in the snowball fights this season. Buffalo is way overdue to have a decent snow season and it should be a fun one at that 🙂

We are curious as to where your snow totals come from. We live in Liverpool (it’s actually the Town of Salina, North Syracuse, so very close to the airport) off Buckley Road. Your site shows 1.6 inches of snow on Saturday for Liverpool and Syracuse Airport. Our snow plower only plows when there is at least 3 inches of snow. He plowed late in the afternoon on Saturday, so there was at least 3 inches on the ground. Looked more like 4 inches. The airport had to have received that much, also – it would be very unusual for our area to get 3-4 inches of snow and the airport only 1.6 inches. In the 27 years we have been back in Syracuse, I don’t think that has ever happened before (possibly once or twice).

The Syracuse airport does come close to Liverpool’s snow totals a lot of the time but there are times when they show a pretty good difference and this was one of them. It always comes down to which way the winds are blowing as I’m sure you already know. Especially if it was a lake effect snow band on Saturday. Unfortunately, I’m at a point in age now where I can’t remember what went on yesterday let alone 3 days ago but I am thinking LES 🙂 I use to do a lot of work in Cicero back in the day and it would be snowing like crazy there. As soon as I crossed a Thruway bridge there was nothing. Anyways, the totals I have should be right and I do get all of the snow stats for Syracuse from the National Weather Service out of Binghamton which do come from the airports.
