How The Cities Stand After Snow Storm

Well the storm is over and it didn’t change a whole lot as far as the lead goes. Both Buffalo and Syracuse got just about the same amount of snow the last couple of days. Rochester ended up winning this round but need 2- 3 more of those storms to get near the top and that’s only if they miss Buffalo and Syracuse. I don’t see that happening. Bingo stayed out of this round and Albany picked up a handful of snow.

This snow storm did put Rochester and Syracuse over their totals for the season so anything now is just a bonus, lol if that’s what we want to call it 🙂 So now 4 of the 5 cities are over their seasonal snow totals except for Binghamton who needs just 2 tenths of an inch to pass theirs.

This storm did make a pretty big difference in the National Snowiest Big City Contest in the country though. Syracuse has closed to within 2 inches of the leader which is Erie, Pa. Buffalo moved up into the number 3 spot on the snow mountain and Rochester is now in the top 5 snowiest cities in the US. You can check out the Nation Snow Contest here. Here is what I have for the cities for the storm totals or for the last couple of days.

Rochester – 16.2
Buffalo – 13.8
Syracuse – 13.6
Albany – 5.5
Binghamton – 0.4

Update 9:30 AM 3/13 – First keep in mind that the overnight snow hasn’t been reported yet and aren’t included in these totals. That said it looks like as of now anyway, that Buffalo has melted a little bit of Syracuse’s lead away. Syracuse was ahead by 8 inches before this last batch of snow came out of the freezer and now it’s just over 6 inches. Still a lot of time left for Buffalo to catch Da’Cuse 😉 Here are the snow totals for yesterday from NOAA. Looking at my driveway right now I’m guessing there will be more snow to add to the totals from the overnight snow so Stay Tuned. So far Rochester is winning this round and has gone over the 100 inch mark. Rochester is also finally starting to pull away from Binghamton and it will be interesting to see where they are in the National Snow Contest Here. Buffalo as of the last update has moved into the #3 spot on the snow mountain in that race to the top 😉

Rochester – 14.9
Buffalo – 13.8 which broke a date record set back in 1959 of 7.3 inches. WTG!
Syracuse – 12.1 inches of snow.

Update 10:30 PM 3/12 – I’m starting to think that the snow contest could get really interesting come tomorrow. I’m hearing that Buffalo’s snow totals for today may be at 13.5 inches right now. Depending on what happens during the overnight Buffalo has a good chance at moving even closer to the top of the snow hill and who know what else 😉

Update 7:00 PM 3/12 – Just updated all of the cities and the snow race just got tighter. Both Buffalo and Rochester picked up just a little bit more snow than Syracuse but remember that every inch is big this late into the season. Here is what has been reported so far today.

Buffalo – 9.4
Rochester – 8.2
Syracuse – 8.0

Update 3:00 PM 3/12 – Steady snow in the Syracuse area with heavier snow expected anytime now. The winds have been quiet so far but are also expected to pick up soon. The last 2 hourly measurements I took it was snowing at a rate of 1 1/2 inches per hour. I was just watching Rochester on the weather channel and no doubt they are in a blizzard and it is nasty. How has the snow storm been where you are right now? Stay Safe and take it slow all… I will be getting an update posted when the new NOAA stats come out in awhile, normally between 5-6 PM. Should be interesting and stay tuned..

I’m sure most of you have already heard about the new snow storm that is going to hit sometime in the wee hours of tonight and tomorrow. I’ve been reading around and seeing all kind of forecasts for different amounts of snow that the Golden Snowball cities will be getting. Syracuse has a slight lead over Buffalo right now of 8 inches and if I were a betting man, oh yeah, I am 😉 I would be putting my money on Rochester I think for this round.

I’m also betting that Buffalo will be able to melt away some of the lead that Syracuse has right now and who knows, just a little shift in the storm and Buffalo could be the new king of the Snow Hill come the end of Thursday. I think it will also be interesting to see how much if any lake effect starts up when the cold air comes through.

Here is what we saw at last check of what NOAA was predicting. 18-24 inches of snow for Rochester, 14 – 18 inches for Buffalo, 8 – 14 inches for Syracuse and I’m not seeing anything for Albany. Syracuse Adds to Lead Rochester Moves Up

Syracuse has added a few snowflakes to widen their lead on second place Buffalo.  Syracuse now leads by 7.2 inches as of the last update.  Don’t worry Buffalo fans, there is still plenty of time left to catch Syracuse and win the Golden Snowball trophy.  It seems like every time I look at the radar something is falling in Buffalo.  Hopefully they keep the pressure on Syracuse.  Buffalo is also doing good this season in the National Snow Contest Here.

Rochester managed to slip and slide past Binghamton the last update and are now in third place. I want to say that Rochester is having a bad year as far as snow goes but they are actually over their average snow totals for where they should be for this time in the season.

Now while I was sleeping and I don’t know how I missed this Buffalo and Albany slid past what their snow totals for the entire season. Buffalo has 106.1 inches of snow right now and what they get on average for the entire season is 94.7. Albany is at 65.2 right now and their entire season averages 59.1. Way to go Buffalo and Albany on being the first cities to go over you seasonal totals. Binghamton most likely is next needing only 0.8 inches to pass their normal. Of course this season I don’t think anything has been too normal across the country as far as snow and cold goes.

Buffalo Hanging Tough with Current Snow King Syracuse

Updated 2/27 6:00 PM – Buffalo took this last round and closed in on the 6 inch lead that Syracuse had.  As of right now Buffalo only trails last seasons snow champ by 2 inches.  It doesn’t get much closer than that.  Go Buffalo 🙂

Syracuse has added a few more snowflakes to their snow totals but Buffalo doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. Right now it’s just a 6 inch lead for the defending snow champs Syracuse which we all know is nothing at this time in the snow season. That lead could change with just one snow event hitting Buffalo and missing Syracuse. Unfortunately for Buffalo is that they have been stuck at 99.1 inches for awhile now. The same thing happened to Syracuse when they were stuck at 99.9 inches.

One thing that has stood out the last couple of updates is the difference in snow totals for all of the cities from this snow season to last seasons. Buffalo, Binghamton and Albany really stand out and what a difference a season makes. Buffalo as of today has 99.1 inches of snow compared to last season at this time when they had only 47.6 inches. That’s 51.5 inches of snow more than they did this time last season. What they are over so far is more than what Buffalo had last season 🙂 Plus Buffalo is 22 inches over their normal snow totals for this date.

Albany and Binghamton both stand out also. Albany has 37.9 inches of snow more than this time last season and Binghamton has 31.6 inches more than last season. Both cities are also just about 20 inches over their normal snowfall to date. Syracuse and Rochester are right around their normal snowfall for this time in the season give or take a few inches.

I was reading around the NOAA website and it’s looking like the long term, next 10 days or so are suppose to be colder than normal. Just what we want to hear huh? Plus I was reading something about some possible storms for the beginning of March. It’s way too early for the National Weather Service to predict that far out but as we get closer to March it may get interesting in the Golden Snowball contest. Is anyone ready for Spring yet? Hopefully come April 😉

Exactly 100 Inches of Snow for Syracuse So Far

Just a quick post that Syracuse has hit the 100 inch mark this season. 100.0 inches to be exact. Buffalo is still staying close to Syracuse and added another couple of inches. I think the question now is where the heck is Rochester this season? Rochester is always right up there but for some reason just can’t get it going yet.

I think it’s time for a few of you in Rochester to do a snow dance to see if you can get the snow flying again. There is still enough time to make a run for the King of the Snow Hill but time is slowly running out. Have a Great Night All!

It’s Official Syracuse New King of The Snow Hill

I was looking at snow stats all day trying to figure out if Syracuse got enough snow from the storm PAX to overtake Buffalo for the number one spot and to take over as King of the snow hill for now anyways. The National weather service just posted the new snow stats and Syracuse has knocked Buffalo from the top of the hill. This snow race isn’t even close to being over and right now Syracuse is only on top by about 4 snowflakes.

That 4 snowflakes was just enough though to slip past Buffalo who has been hanging in the top spot this season for quite awhile now. Buffalo has held the top spot since around January 8th which is a long time for any of the cities to stay on the top. January 7th was the last time that Syracuse was the King and at one point between then and now Buffalo had over a foot lead on Syracuse. No doubt Buffalo has impressed me this season along with all of the cities and that’s even including Albany. Did I just say that Albany has impressed me? You won’t hear that too often. Anyways like I mentioned, the snow race isn’t even close to being over and pretty much all of the cities are still in the hunt for the Golden Snowball Trophy 🙂

Here are what should be the totals from snow storm PAX if my math is right and as always keep in mind it normally isn’t 😉 This is taking the totals from the last two days and adding them together. Keep in mind that the storm stayed to the east of Rochester and Buffalo for the most part.

Albany – 14.4
Syracuse – 9.5
Binghamton – 6.1
Rochester – 2.1
Buffalo – 0.1

Will Buffalo Stay King of The Snow Hill

Things are starting to get interesting as far as the Golden Snowball contest goes. I’m looking at anywhere between 8-12 inches of new snow in my driveway right now which is a little east of the airport. It will be interesting to see if the airport received as much as we did in the Syracuse area. If so it’s going to be a close snow contest at the top.

The new totals don’t include any overnight snow I believe so they will/should be going up a little later when some new snow stats come out from the National Weather Service. Binghamton managed to slip by Rochester with this last storm and to be honest I was surprised that Rochester had some snow to report. The chances are that the storm made it far enough to the west to give them a little snow. Just a couple of days back it didn’t even look like the storm was going to be west enough for Syracuse to get in on it yet a lone Rochester.

I’m guessing that Albany, Binghamton and Syracuse will make out the best with this recent storm and like I mentioned we will find out later when the new snow stats come out. Here is what is being reported so far which is for yesterday.

Albany – 5.6
Binghamton – 4.3
Syracuse – 4.1
Rochester – 1.9
Buffalo – Trace
