First off a Big Shout Out to the Syracuse men’s basketball team for pulling off another unbelievable come from behind victory once again against Pittsburgh. For those of you who were lucky enough to catch the game you can relate to it doesn’t get any better than that. WTG Syracuse, keep it going and Thanks for the exciting season so far ๐Ÿ™‚

Speaking of a come from behind victory that’s what it’s going to take to knock Buffalo off the top of the snow hill. Buffalo has been sitting up there for awhile now just looking down on the rest of us. Syracuse has been chipping away at Buffalo’s lead the last week or so to bring Buffalo’s lead to less than a foot of snow now. With the storm that’s going on to the east it will be interesting to see if Syracuse can at least tap into a couple inches of snow from it. Buffalo is currently ahead by 9 inches of snow over 2d place Syracuse.

Right now it’s looking like Albany and probably Binghamton will make out the best from this storm that’s going on right now. My grandson who is down in the Carolina’s is at least getting to have some fun in the snow ๐Ÿ™‚ He’s been out in the snow a couple of times here but normally when they visit the timing hasn’t been great for any decent snow. The last storm they got down in the south he got out in it and learned that snow is really cold by falling face first in it. I think he’s learned ๐Ÿ˜‰

One other note is that a visitor suggested that I start putting the time when I post the stats which I thought was a great idea. I normally do if I am doing several updates during a storm but not every day. Anyways providing I remember I will put the time of the update at the top of the snow stats where I have it right now. This kind of gives you an idea if the stats were just from the previous day or if some of the current days snow stats were added too. Normally any of the updates before 5 – 6 PM only include the previous days snow totals. Obviously I try to get a couple updates in a day if I see it is snowing in one of the cities. Stay Tuned, it should be interesting to see how the cities lineup when this storm to the east is over. It is sooo close but yet sooo far away ๐Ÿ™

Have a Great Day All!

1/6 3:30 – Well that was short lived for Binghamton. OK, maybe not because I guess as of right now Binghamton is still in 3rd place but tied with Rochester for the spot. We’ll have to wait and see what the next update from the National Weather Service has to offer ๐Ÿ™‚ Here are the totals being reported for yesterdays snow storm..

Binghamton – 13.2 beating the old date snow record of 3.0 back in 1976
Rochester – 12.7 breaking the date record of 5.5 back in 1907
Albany – 10.4 breaking the old date record of 8.0 inches dating back to 1975
Syracuse – 10.0 inches breaking the 1995 date record of 5.6 inches of snowfall
Buffalo – 8.8 beating the date record of 5.2 going way back to 1916

All in all some pretty good totals for all of the Golden Snowball cities. Stay tuned and have a Great Day ๐Ÿ™‚

1/5 – Binghamton Storms past Rochester to take the number 3 spot on the snow hill ๐Ÿ™‚

OK, I just found some snow stats for Syracuse and Binghamton and it’s looking like Binghamton may be the big winner of this round. Binghamton so far has crushed their date record for snow showing 11.4 inches of snow breaking the old record of 3 inches set back in 1976.

Syracuse so far is reporting 7 inches breaking the date record of 5.6 inches of snow set back in 1995.

I’ve been trying to get an update in for awhile now but The National Weather Service’s (NOAA)website seems to be having problems. I’m sure with this big of a snow storm the website is most likely getting pounded. I was able to get some newer snow stats for Buffalo and Rochester however Binghamton, Syracuse and Albany haven’t been updated yet for today.

Buffalo set a date record picking up 7.4 inches of new snow breaking the old record of 5.2 going all the way back to 1916. Rochester also broke/tied a record for the day with 5.5 inches of snow going all the way back to 1907. I say broke because most likely Rochester will be adding more to their snow totals.

I’ll take a look later to see if NOAA is reporting some new snow stats and post them as they come in. Guessing where I am at we have about 9 – 11 inches of snow just outside of the Syracuse area. We’ll see what NOAA has for us, stay tuned…

Are you feeling a bit tired of the snow? I’m sure some of the smaller towns that get pounded by snow every season and don’t get any recognition may be by now. Below is a Cute story that has been going around the internet for a couple of years now about the weather in Good Ole New York State and is one of my favorites. Author unknown!

Dear Diary

August 12th – Moved to our new home in New York. It is so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic, can hardly wait to see snow covering them.

October 14th – New York is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are all turned colors with shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful mountains and saw some deer. They were so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animal on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.

November 11th – Deer season will start soon. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon.

December 2nd – It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white snow. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came by, we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place, I love New York.

December 12th – More snow last night. I love it. The snowplow did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here in New York.

December 19th – More snow last night. I couldn’t get out of the driveway to get to work. I am exhausted from shoveling. Dumb snowplow.

December 22nd – More STUPID snow last night. I’ve got blisters on my hands from shoveling and I think the snowplow hides around the curve and waits until I’m done shoveling the driveway. The JERK!

December 25th – Merry Christmas. More STUPID snow! If I ever get my hands on that STUPID JERK who drives the snowplow, I swear I’ll kill the driver. Don’t know why they don’t use more salt on the roads to melt the darn ice.

December 27th – More snow fell last night. I’ve been inside for three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that snowplow goes through. Can’t go anywhere; car’s stuck in a mountain of snow. The weatherman says to expect another 10″ of snow again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10″ is?

December 28th – The darned weatherman was wrong again! We got 34″ of snow this time. At this rate it won’t melt before the summer. The snowplow got stuck in the road and that STUPID JERK had the nerve to come to the door and ask to borrow my shovel. After I told him I had broken six shovels already shoveling all the snow he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one over his STUPID head!

January 4th – Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get some food and on the way back a darned deer ran in front of the car and I hit it. It did about $3000.00 dollars worth of damage to the car. Those beasts should be killed. Wish the hunters would have gotten them all last November.

May 3rd – Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusting out from the STUPID salt they put all over the roads.

May 10th – Moved to Florida. I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that god forsaken state of New York.

Gotta Love New York!!!

Have a Great day All!

Yesterday I decided it was time to do the highly anticipated Snow Dance to help Syracuse hold on the Golden Snowball trophy. Give it about 36 hours to kick in though. Right now it is freezing and sunny as can be in the Syracuse area. Let’s just hope I didn’t get my dances mixed up and ended up doing a Sun dance instead of the snow dance. Next thing you know it will be in the 70’s here in Syracuse while the rest of the nation is freezing. Hmmm, that may not be a bad thing Huh ๐Ÿ˜‰ Make me wonder if Ellen (NYCO) remembered to put the Snow God out this season…

Lake Erie has frozen over so it’s advantage Syracuse, Rochester and Binghamton right?ย  Ummm, not quite and as a matter of fact Buffalo keeps adding to their snow totals for the 2013 – 2014 snow season while also increasing the lead over the other cities.

Buffalo is now an even foot of snow over the next snowiest city, Syracuse.ย  If Syracuse, Binghamtonย and Rochacha get snow Buffalo gets more.ย  Just an inch or so but it is starting to add up and so far a mainly frozen lake Erie hasn’t slowed Buffalo down yet.ย  The same is happening in the National Snow Contest where Erie, PA holds a decent lead and seems to add snow just about everyday even though their main source is also Lake Erie.ย  Buffalo has slowly been chipping away at Erie’s lead though in that contest.ย  Go Buffalo.

One of our visitors to the national snow site, The Snowiest City in the US made a post about Lake Erie, Buffalo and Erie, PA. Quoting Bryan,”Lake Erie frozen over pretty good but can still produce some lake effect from the following ways: moisture flux through the ice itself, moisture from cracks in the ice (often the wind can shift ice fields), and moisture through holes in the ice. Even brief thaws can open up the lake a bit. Also, friction and convergence from moisture going over the frozen surface can enhance snow somewhat. Finally, central Lake Huron is still open so Erie can still get lake effect off Huron in a NW flow, but even this is greatly diminished as Huron is freezing over pretty good this year. Having said that, Syracuse has plenty of time to catch up with Erie as they can get good snows off Ontario (they have lake effect snow warnings as I type this) and any good Norโ€™easter that sends heavy snow just a bit more inland than the past couple storms could easily put Syracuse in the lead”.

The only other news is that Rochester has finally slipped past Binghamton by a few snowflakes to take over the number 3 spot on the snow hill. Something in the back of my mind tells me Rochester is going to make a run sometime soon.

Have a Great Day All!

1/26/14 Update – Just a quick post that even a frozen Lake Erie isn’t slowing Buffalo down.ย  Buffalo continues to add to their snow totals and are now just over a foot of snow ahead of the next snowiest city, Syracuse.ย  WTG Buffalo ๐Ÿ˜‰

——————————————————————–

Buffalo is still hanging tough on top of the Golden Snowball snow hill but things could start to change. Looking at some graphs and pictures it looks like Lake Erie has frozen over. In other words it looks like Buffalo’s lake effect machine has just about run out of gas. I’m still adding to their snow totals though so they are still picking up some snow and just enough to keep ahead of the rest of the GSB cities.

All of the Great Lakes seem to have more ice than normal but keep in mind I’m normally clueless. Lake Ontario looks to be wide open and should stay that way other than the east side of the lake. Lake effect snow is in the forecast tonight for some of the cities and lets hope it pans out this time. It’s been too quiet lately and a little too cold for my liking. I think I would rather have the mid 20’s with snow than this Artic air and no snow. Just my opinion of course ๐Ÿ˜‰

Where has Rochester been this season? Right now they are sitting just one spot ahead of Albany. Just one storm away from going to the bottom of the snow hill. Come on Rochester, let’s pick it up a bit and start piling on some snow. I think it’s time for some of you folks in Rochester to do a snow dance. This guy here is getting ready to do one for the Syracuse area and it will be in the next day or two.

In the National snow contest at www.goldensnowglobe.com Erie, PA is holding on to a pretty good lead right now and right behind them is Buffalo, NY. Erie’s days on the top of the snow mountain could be numbered also seeing how Lake Erie is also their main source of lake effect snow. I think the next week or so is going to get interesting, or at least I am hoping it does.

Have a Great Day All and LET’S GO SYRACUSE ORANGE!!!

It’s finally snowing in some of the Golden Snowball cities and all we can do is shovel, wait and see if any of the cities can cut down on Buffalo’s snow lead. Is it snowing in Buffalo?

Is it snowing right now in your neck of the woods? I took a quick look outside a little while ago and I’m guessing that around 4 inches fell so far where I am living which is just outside of the city. I’m curious if the other cities are getting snow also and if so about how much? Looking at the radar my guess is yes.

The snow totals which come from NOAA are up to date as of what fell yesterday but aren’t reflecting the overnight snow and what has fallen so far today. I will do my best to get another update in later when the early evening snow stats come out from NOAA. Of course most of them will be coming out during the SU – Pitt game and you can pretty much bet I won’t be posting them then. This game should be a good one and I think this is the most worried I have been going into a game all season. Let’s hope the SU fans at the Dome make the difference in this game…

Have a Great Day All! GO SYRACUSE, KEEP IT GOING ๐Ÿ˜‰
