LATE NIGHT – The stats are posted and are now official. Buffalo has the first lead change of the season bumping Binghamton down to second place. Go Buffalo!!!

Earlier – The General (from Buffalo) and ZR800 (Rochester) both reported that the snow was falling this morning and it’s about time that both of those cities finally get on the snow board. WTG!

Buffalo is doing it in style by most likely jumping right into the lead for the first time this season. After reading around it’s looking like they have started their snow season on December 1st with 5.8 inches of snow. That’s what it is looking like according to some unofficial stats that NOAA does have up. The official stats should be out later. Most likely Buffalo will also be in the top 10 in the new contest of snowiest cities in the US. That is at least until I find all of the snow stats for the US cities with a population of 100,000 or more.

Rochester it looks like will be on the snow board when the official stats come out later also. 1.6 inches which is enough for them to pass Syracuse I believe and take over the 3rd place spot. Both Buffalo and Rochester stats were as of 7:00 am this morning so the snow stats may go up if any other snow fell since then.

Binghamton along with DaCuse probably have nothing to show but maybe a trace to a couple of tenths of snow. The snow was all around here but I think it may have stayed a bit further to the north and west of both cities. Look for the official totals a little later.

Steven put out another forecast for a couple of areas on the new site at goldensnowglobe.com. He did a great job IMO with his first snow cast only missing by one city which was Bingo. Check it out at http://goldensnowglobe.com/category/us-snow-forecast/ It’s pretty interesting as to how he is doing it.

Have a Great Day Everyone!

I think the way this season is going we may end up renaming the contest the Golden Snow Less Award. When Binghamton is winning the contest with just flake over the 3 inch mark something just isn’t right. Syracuse broke the all time record of 276 consecutive days in a row with less than an inch of snowfall that went way back to 1946 on Friday and we are still adding on the days. Just to show you how strange that is, CNN’s weather even mentioned it. Read more about the record at Syracuse.com

I did a shout out for help on finding out what kind of record Buffalo is sledding toward and Jill came through with an article from Buffalo news.com. Thanks Jill πŸ™‚ According to a story on their site Buffalo has now had the 4th longest period without measurable snow on record which dates back to 1884. The record they just passed for 4th was 233 days that was set in 1998. The thing is they still have a realistic shot at moving to their 3rd longest stretch without snow if they can make it to 240 days. 239 days will tie the record set in 1922. A good article about it is at Buffalonews.com.

Selhan a visitor to the site mentioned that the Democrat and Chronicle has an article out about how their snow less days are adding up. Brian Sharp wrote that according to Steve McLaughlin from the national weather service this has been the longest snow less period in 57 years. You can check it out at the http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20091127/NEWS01/911270337 . Thanks Selhan : ) This can only mean one thing!

No I’m not talking about global warming. I’m talking about it’s, it’s, it’s time for

THE SNOW DANCE!

As much as I am enjoying this like most of you are it just isn’t right. Doesn’t feel right and drastic measures need to be taken. The snow dance will take place within the next couple of days. As you all know it will be at an undisclosed location and time for the fact that it must never be recorded.

Hey, the big cities in New York are getting our butts kicked right now in the new snowiest city in the US contest by the big cities in Colorado. That’s not going to happen. At least not on my watch without at least giving the snow dance a shot ; ) Right now Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester are all behind the US snow contest by around 3 feet. Nothing to worry about this early in the season but it’s time to get the white gold flying again and make sure one of us lock up the bragging rights as snowiest big city in the US.

Have a Great Week All!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone from our family to yours. A green thanksgiving at that and it looks like the longest time for Syracuse without one inch of snow record has a really good chance at being broken come tomorrow. I’ll have to look up the other cities to see if they have broken any records. You would think that Buffalo and Rochester may have also. Anyone have any info on that? Also I’m posting some online specials from Walmart that I believe are just for today so check those out if your looking for deals.

According to Stephen, better known to all of us here as PSUSyr5, this weekend will be pretty much snowless for all of the Golden Snowball cities. He came up with an idea to try this season where he does a general forecast of different regions across the US and for the GSB cities. Stephen is a graduate of Penn State with a degree in Meteorology. So he is laying his forecasting skills on the line for us and it should be fun to see how he does. Picking on him is definitely allowed (Its even Encouraged πŸ™‚ if or should I say when he blows it πŸ˜‰ Just go easy on him. He made his first forecast of the season at Golden Snow Globe so check it out when you get the chance. Good Luck PSUSyr5 πŸ™‚

A special Happy Thanksgiving and THANKS to all of the soldiers and their families. No doubt it’s tough being wherever you may be serving and fighting for us and our country. It has to be especially tough being away from your families. This will be our first Thanksgiving without my oldest son Shane being around and it just won’t be the same. Now that he is a border patrol man he’ll be working a lot of holidays most likely for a while anyways. Happy Thanksgiving Shane πŸ˜‰

WARNING: SALES PITCH AHEAD!

OK! Speaking of holidays a rep from Walmart just sent me some of the specials and items for the Walmart Thanksgiving sale. I’m pretty sure these specials are just for today and normally they run out of a lot of the gifts. If you see somwthing you like I’d jump on it becuase it may not be around long and I don’t know if they will carry over until tomorrow or not. Either way this whole weekend will be a sale of sales all over the internet and I’ll be posting what’s sent to me ASAP so check back. A lot of the time the merchants that I do business with don’t like us to post the sales until that day. It’s time for me to try and make a buck or two! My real living is called online marketing. That’s where I send my visitors to certain sites and they pay me a commission. Sites like walmart, Sears and some online stores that you may not of heard of. Anyways I don’t push it here other than a few posts for the Christmas season.

Below are some items on sale at Walmart including cameras, tv’s the 8 gig ipod and more. I just took a look and they have a ton of other stuff on sale today. They also have some 97 cent shipping and always have free site to store shipping. Enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

First off GO CUSE!!!!! Great game against Cal and UNC guys πŸ™‚ Also the new Golden Snow Globe contest has been updated.

OK, I was just looking at a lot of last years stats for the GSB cities and came to the conclusion that we are having a pretty similar start so far this season. Well, other than Syracuse still has a shot at that longest time without an inch of snow record.

All of the cities are within a couple of inches of last years totals to date. The only thing that may be a little different is that this is about the time that some snow started to fall last season. Right now there really isn’t much in the forecast for snow as far as I’ve seen. Maybe sometime next week toward the end of it.

November was a so-so month and December was a kick butt month. By the end of November the snowfall stats were something like;

Syracuse
16.7

Binghamton
15.6

Rochester
11.1

Buffalo
6.3

Albany
0.5

The real snow started falling right around the 10th of December and by the end of December the snow stats were something like;

Syracuse
68.4

Buffalo
45.6

Rochester
45.6

Binghamton
32.7

Albany
20.8

It will be interesting to see if we have a similar season as the last one. If we end up with close to the same totals as we all had by the end of December look out. I don’t think we will be as lucky as we were last season as far as hardly any snow toward the end of the contest.

As far as the new contest goes I’m still looking up city stats but Colorado seems to be cleaning up so far. Some of the cities have 2 – 3 foot jump on us already.

Go Northeast!!! Have a Great Weekend All!

The Golden Snowball contest goes national. Well kind of but not really πŸ˜‰ The golden snowball contest will remain and a new one begins. After several years of prodding from our visitors to the GSB and snow fans from actually across the country a new contest has been born. It’s called the Golden Snow Globe contest and can be found at goldensnowglobe.com .

Many people have asked in the past why not have a contest for the snowiest big city (population 100,000+) in the whole United States? I’ve always loved the idea of it and it was just a matter of making sure I would have the time to put into it. So far about 50 hours into just trying to find stats and throw the website up and there still isn’t a whole lot to show for it.

With that said I’ll be adding stuff to the site in the next couple of days and hopefully, a big HOPEFULLY at that I will have most of the city stats that I need. Whatever stats you may see at the new national snow contest site will e changed and brought up to date. In other words I wouldn’t pay much attention to them right now.

Most likely one of the cities in Colorado are winning the contest right now but I still have a lot of city stats to put together. I know Colorado has had a couple of storms so far and at last check Denver had at least 17.2 inches. Probably more by now. Chances are none of the New York cities are even in the top ten right now.

Personally I think this will be a super fun contest with people from many other states chiming in about how they feel about getting a lot of snow. The competitiveness from snow lovers and haters for that matter should by itself make it a fun contest.

The plan right now will be to have a rolling top ten list on the main page at the Golden Snow Globe contest site. That meaning that as long as your city is one of top 10 snowiest cities in the US you’ll be on the main page. If you drop out of the top 10 your history until you can grab some more of the white gold to make it back to the to ten list. We will try to have an updated page of all the cities though that have a chance at winning. Obviously I’m not going to waste too much time on states like Florida and the likes. No offense to those states of course but unless some really, Really freaky weather occurs ya just don’t stand a chance.

A prize to the winning city is still in the process of being decided. Maybe a plague, trophy or a snow globe will be awarded to the winner each year. I’m also hoping to have some guests posting from different people from some of the snowier cities. Perhaps a TV Meteorologist or local news reporter. A regular visitor at GSB has a fun idea so look for some forecasts at the new site. Some other ideas are being tossed around and we definitely want to here some of your ideas.

Check out the site at goldensnowglobe but remember as I mentioned it’s no wheres close to being ready. I figured that the first people to get a preview should be the regular visitors here at golden snowball.

Have a Super Day All!

Today was the first snowflakes that I’ve seen falling this season. Syracuse is finally posting at least a trace of snow and I’m sure once the National weather service does it’s new update there will be measurable snow for at least a couple of the golden snowball cities. The snow was actually coming down pretty good and sticking for a little while this morning. Not a trace to be seen here in DaCuse now though.

Hopefully Buffalo and Rochester will be on the snow board also when the stats come out later. Binghamton has already seen a couple of inches so far this season and even added a .2 inches more to their totals yesterday. I’ll try to do an update later when the stats come out from NOAA.

Computer problems (Bad Video Card) and another project I’m working on has been the reason for the lack of posts here. Well that plus I needed to see some of the white stuff to finally get me motivated. Of course looking at a couple of 50 – 60 degree days in the near future that motivation may die down a bit but it will return.

As for the project I’ve been working on I think most of you are going to like it. Ummm, at least 3 of the GSB cities will. I don’t think Binghamton and Albany will be as enthused which is kind of a clue as to what I’m working on. I wanted to have it up and ready by November 1st but it’s taking wayyyy longer than expected. I probably have about 30 hours into it with not a whole lot to show for those hours. Makes me think to myself, what the hell am I getting myself into. I’m psyched though and hopefully it works out and turns out to be a new, fun way to enjoy and pass the snowy months away. More to come soon!

Have a Great Day All!
