Golden Snowball

Buffalo Leads Golden Snowball Contest

Buffalo continues to lead the Golden Snowball contest by more than half a foot of snow this season. It is just the beginning of the season and I’m sure just reading that made a few people cringe but it is just the start of he snow season.

I think the rest of the cities should be glad that the airport didn’t get that epic lake effect snow that fell on some of the cities to the west or the snow contest would be pretty much over already. Then again I am sure that the city of Buffalo is also glad they didn’t get that lake effect.

Syracuse’s snow stats have changed within the last few days. I think NOAA has decided to deduct the snow totals as the snow melts. I’m joking of course and every now and then there is an adjustment on a city’s snow totals whether it be a reporting mistake or perhaps just a typo. Syracuse at one point a few days ago was reporting 11 inches of snowfall on the season but as of the last couple of days are only showing 8.7 inches. No biggy except it is always nice to see Rochester in last place too every now and then.

I think for later today they are predicting a mix of snow and rain, and snow sleet freezing rain but nothing major as far as I know. Chances are the roads will get slick though so take it slow. Look for another update later in the day and have a great day πŸ™‚

First a Big Thanks to Emily R for your donation to the snow site. It helps a lot and as always I truly appreciate it πŸ™‚

Updated 7 pm Thanksgiving Night – Wow, Rochester managed to stay out of last place by 0.1 of an inch and Da’Cuse stays in last place in the snow contest. Binghamton keeps closing in on Buffalo who is now only just a few inches ahead of them. One good blast to any of the cities could move them into the top spot πŸ™‚

One thing I have noticed the last couple of days is that this about the the same time that the snow started falling last season in most of the cities. A great start to the new 2014 – 2015 Golden Snoball Contest πŸ˜‰

Have a great Thanksgiving night all and a couple of words come to mind. Pepto Bismol πŸ™‚

Updated Noon Thanksgiving Day – Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your families πŸ˜‰

Both Albany and Binghamton set records for the date yesterday. Albany reported 9.6 inches of new snow breaking the old record of 4.9 inches set in 1888. Wow, that’s an old record to beat.. Binghamton had 9.0 inches beating the old record set in 1977 which was 8.7 inches.

Both Albany and Binghamton climbed up the snow hill to take the number 2 and 3 slot on the hill. Last seasons snow champ is now officially in dead last πŸ˜‰

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving All πŸ™‚

Updated 11/26 6 PM – I just updated the snow stats and almost as planned both Albany and Binghamton are doing good with this storm. Binghamton has managed to move up to the number 2 slot passing both Syracuse and Rochester on the snow hill and has actually received more snow than Albany so far. WTG Bingo πŸ˜‰

Albany has pushed Syracuse to the bottom of the snow contest (snicker) picking up 9.6 inches of new snowfall so far. They also broke a date record that goes all the way back to 1888. The old record was 4.9 inches set back in 1988 and so far Albany has 5 inches and still counting. WTG Albany! It will be interesting to see where all of the cities are come the next update πŸ˜‰

Look out Albany, it looks like it’s your turn for a change πŸ˜‰ First and far most take this snow storm seriously and take it slow on the roads if you are traveling. The chances are the roads will be getting pretty nasty sometime soon. Also please leave a comment if you get a chance to let us know if and how hard it is snowing in your neck of the woods.

Albany looks to win this round of snowfall or is that lose this round although Binghamton may have something to say about that. From what I have been reading, Albany is pretty much in the middle of the Nor’easter that has been set up along the coast. I have been reading that Albany is expecting at least 8 inches of new snowfall from this snow storm. I don’t think Albany will get enough snow to slip past Buffalo’s snow totals but they should have a good chance at being in the second slot on the snow hill by the time Mother Nature is done dropping the white gold on them πŸ˜‰

Binghamton could make out from this storm also. I’m no expert so check with the pros to see whats going on and what is forecast for today and tonight. Below you will find a couple of links to The National Weather Service that have the latest winter storm warnings for Albany and Binghamton.

It could be a close race for last place too. Syracuse is expected to get a few inches so if everything goes accordingly, which it never does, it could be Syracuse and Rochester fighting for the last place spot on the snow hill πŸ˜‰

I’ll be keeping this post updated as best I can as the snow stats start to come in from the National Weather Service. If you have a chance, please let us know what’s going on in your area and Remember, See Snow – Drive Slow. Stay tuned for a later day update.

OK, I normally try to keep the snow site fun after all that’s what it’s all about. Having fun and maybe helping the winter season pass by a little faster. That said what’s going on in the surrounding Buffalo area is I think one of the most serious situations I have seen. With that I am just going to post a couple of comments that were were posted and you won’t hear me say this too often but I do hope the snow stops soon. Here is what Angelo posted in a comment to the site and my reply.

Angelo – “Just wanted to update you guys, official snow fall in my town of Lancaster over last 2 days is 73 inches, south buffalo has about 65 on the ground. Airport is on the border of the heavy snow line but should receive another foot tonight and tomorrow. Lancaster is looking at another 20 plus inches in the same time frame. Maybe we can reach that magic number of 100 inches! In all seriousness this storm has claimed 7 lives so far and has collapsed a number of roofs and with the additional snow and 50 degree temps we will be seeing Sunday through Tuesday I’m sure we will be seeing even more collapses and major flooding. Wish us luck!”

Me – “Hey Angelo, Wow is still the only word that comes to mind. It’s cool seeing the numbers, pictures and videos but then again I wish I wasn’t seeing them because I know how serious the situation is there and all around there. Definitely Good Luck to all of you effected and I hope there are no more deaths from this unbelievable snowfall. My thought s and Yes prayers are with all of you. I’m not looking forward to what we will most likely be reading once the temps start going up. Stay Safe,”

I wish Nothing but the best to our friends in the Buffalo area πŸ˜‰
Patrick

A Big Thank You Bonnie L. for your recent donation to the snow site. I truly appreciate you taking the time to do so and they always help out. Thanks Bonnie πŸ™‚

Updated 11/19 6 PM – Ok, Buffalo has double what they had the last update and I still think when all is said and done they will have a pretty decent lead on the rest of us. Right now they are at 8.5 inches on the season adding another 4.5 inches of snow since the last update. I also still think they are going to make a run for the top slot in the National snow contest before all is said and done. Go Buffalo and Stay Tuned πŸ˜‰

—————————————-
It’s not too often I feel for our arch rival, Buffalo but I do today for a couple of reasons. First off when I checked the snow stats from NOAA and only saw 2.7 inches of new snow being at reported at the airport I was shocked. Especially after looking at probably over 100 pictures today of the unbelievable amounts of snow that has been falling all around the Buffalo area. Don’t get me wrong either.

I understand how lake effect snow is and how it can set up and dump several feet of snow like it’s doing now in the towns around Buffalo and probably even in Buffalo but when I was looking at the radar the last day or so it looked like it was set up where the airport was going to cash in too. Maybe they do measure after the planes take off instead of before like we do here in Syracuse πŸ˜‰

OK, all joking aside I am seeing reports of some epic snowfall in several cities with totals of 4 feet or more and counting. All I can say to all of you folks being affected by that much snow is Please stay safe. As much fun as the snow contest is, that is some serious snow and dangerous to say the least. Good Luck all and Congrats Buffalo on taking the lead…

Right now it’s a 3 way tie in the Golden Snowball contest which I can’t remember if that has ever happened before. There have been several times when 2 cities were tied for the lead but I don’t remember 3 cities being tied for the snow lead. Of course this is only because the overnight snow hasn’t been added yet. I suppose it’s all irreverent though because come the next update a little later it will be Buffalo ahead with a big lead πŸ™‚

I’m hearing several reports of heavy snow along with lightning and thunder in the heavy snow bands around the Buffalo area. Also be advised that as I am typing this according to the National Weather Service and several other news stations The NY State Thruway is closed IN BOTH DIRECTIONS between Exit 46, Rochester, and Exit 59, Dunkirk. Just a heads up πŸ˜‰

The Tug Hill area and Watertown are also getting pounded so get those snowmobile’s tuned up if you haven’t already the trails will probably be ready soon πŸ™‚

I will post updates in this post as the day(s) go on as to what’s going on. The General posted a comment that Buffalo has a shot at breaking their old record of total snowfall in a 24 hour period. A yardstick of snow will break that record. I’ll do another update here when the new snow stats come out which will include the overnight and most of today’s snowfall. Stay Safe all and take it slow if you have to get out in it.

First a Big Thanks to Jonathon T for your donation to the website. The donations help me out a lot at offsetting some of the costs and also lets me know the hours put into the contests are appreciated. Thanks Jonathon πŸ™‚

OK, I had to hurry up and get that out, that Buffalo is in last place in the Golden Snowball contest. Chances are I won’t be saying that for awhile with all of the lake effect snow that they are expecting the next couple of days. So, Yup, Buffalo is in dead last place and even behind Albany, snicker πŸ˜‰

From reading around the weather sites it’s looking like it is still a go for Buffalo to receive close to a couple of feet and maybe even more. Hopefully for you snow lovers the snow bands will set up just right and hang over the airport. Don’t underestimate this either because with the wind and that amount of snow there is no doubt it will be dangerous out there so Drive careful and stay safe.

buffalo and erie, pa lake effect storm

Predictions For Snow

I just added 0.6 of an inch to Buffalo’s totals so the chances are that it is snowing right now there. It will also be interesting to see if Buffalo can over take Erie, Pa in the National Snow Contest Here. Right now Buffalo isn’t even in the top 25 snowiest cities but if this all pans out they should most likely jump to at least second place in the contest. Depending on how Erie makes out with the lake effect snow Buffalo may even have a shot at taking the top spot on the snow mountain in the Golden Snow Globe contest. Stay Tuned!
