Syracuse has held off Rochester and Buffalo down the home stretch to win this seasons contest by only 3.1 inches of snow. It was a close race throughout the season with a late great final charge by Buffalo and Rochester to narrow the lead to within just a few inches. Rochester and Buffalo are the only two cities that hit their average snowfall for the season by the way.
The picture below is from Eric a dedicated Syracuse Crunch Fan and the Snow Crunchie was built by Eric and his 12 year old daughter. I think the picture also sums up the end of the contest. Thanks to Eric and his daughter for sending it in and just click it to enlarge it. Go Crunch in round 2 of the playoffs!
It’s a Wrap!!! There is something about writing those three words that give me goose bumps when I type them each year. I think it comes down to the contest being behind us but better yet so are the cold snowy months. Nice weather is either here or just around the corner and it’s here for several months. It’s a Wrap means no more snow for several months (Lets Hope).
I think it really comes down to is that It’s a Wrap means we all survived another New York State winter and it’s time to bring on the warm sunny days of Summer.
Hats off to The General (aka – Steve Madsen from Buffalo) for doing an awesome job helping out this season at GSB and to all the visitors new and old that made it another fun season while passing away the cold snowy months. Look for a summary of the 2007 – 2008 season to follow in the next few days.
From the General:
Well it’s pretty much official, Syracuse has won the GSB contest AGAIN! sigh… maybe next year Buffalo, maybe next year… When I think about it though, Buffalo has won more GSB awards then the Bills and Sabres combined in winning throphy’s… well anyone who has won more than zero awards has done better then the Sabres and Bills… sigh… another year in Buffalo history…. “Maybe Next Year… Maybe Next Year”…
Woohoo! Go team…er…city!
LOL General to the Dr. Evil plan. I think you should have had all the residents in Buffalo bring their fans down to the lake Tuesday when the temperatures were just right for some good lake effect snow.
Congrats on your winter outlook and no doubt you did kick my butt with the predictions. All I can say about that is that all those near hits that missed this season killed my predictions. So many coastal storms that should of, could of but didn’t take shape. Great job Steve ; )
Lol, Tom! Maybe we can even try a few fans over Onondaga lake next year. Nah, better not try that until it gets cleaner than it is 🙂
Eric, thanks for the cool picture. I just posted the Crunchie snowman. I can’t say that I am a big hockey fan but I do watch it every now and then. The crunch are playing great hockey from what I have read and hopefully they take it all. Syracuse needs a championship under their belts.
Batch, I still can’t imagine life without the four seasons. Unfortunately this snow season had so many blank days without snow at least the GSB cities did anyways. Of course places like Tug Hill and the others had a pretty decent winter with a lot of snow that stuck around. I’m glad you enjoy the site and thanks. I had fun this season also.
Just wanted to say thanks for the updates and the work that has gone into this site. I have been living in the Orlando Florida area for the past 25 years and have missed much of this kind of fun being born and raised just ouside of Syracuse. It’s been fun and would love to have that fan blow some of that white stuff down this far
Hey Pat,
How do you post a picture on this thing?
Eric
Yippe! DaCuse won!
Let’s do it again next year!
BTW General, I will steal your fan and put it over lake Ontario!
I’ll hide it here for now, but come this weekend front page news on GSB will be how The General kicked Pat “The so called Oracle’s” but in snow casting this season. I followed up my awesome rookie year of snow casting at a 13.1% overall error and dropped it down to a 5.0% overall error in my total forcasting this season! Yeah last season I had two cities withing 2.1% of their actual vs forcasted, but this year by biggest city error was only 17% compared to a 35% error the season before. The stats speak for themselves!

Well looking back on the stats, this was the closet contest (3 cities wise) in terms of final snowfall numbers. One 30 minute lake effect squall could have totally changed the standings.
Congrats to the cuse, but hate to tell you Buffalo is taking the trophy in 08-09!
My summer plans…
1. Installing the world’s biggest fan around the cleveland waterfront to provide a 24/7 non stop flow of southwest wind over lake erie.
2. Super heating lake erie to a record 150 degrees F come November, then turning my fan on.. wow that would be nuts!
Yeah who has Dr. Evil’s phone number I need to call out the big guns this summer!
