CONGRATS BUFFALO, NEW YORK
2021-2022 SNOW CHAMPS IN THE
NY GOLDEN SNOWBALL SNOW CONTEST!!! 🙂

Congrats Buffalo, New York on unofficially winning the NY Golden Snowball virtual trophy 🙂 Remember, the snow season goes on until the last second of July 30th. So nothing is official until The National Weather Service posts the final snow totals. Unless some really crazy weather happens (It Won’t) Buffalo will be the official winner. I’ll try and do an end-of-the-season summery in the next day or two.

All Buffalo, NY had to do this season was to be close to their yearly average at the end of the season to win, and they were. Buffalo was the only city out of the 5 to hit their normal season snow totals 🙁

I would have felt calling it a week or so ago like some others did but the snow was still in the forecast and let’s face it, this snow season has been a crazy rollercoaster of temperatures and snow. The weather is still riding the rollercoaster it looks like but the temps should be a little too warm for much snow. JMO 🙂

Meanwhile, check out the Awesome graph below that Jim Kulak made for the contest and let us use it. It pretty much sums up the snow season for Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton, Syracuse and Albany. Check it out!  Thanks, Jim, I appreciate it 🙂

The snow stats below show how much snow on average each city receives between May 1st and June 30th. It also shows the most snow between May and June for each city. Nothing is impossible but it will take record snow for Rochester or any other city at this time to pass Buffalo.

Most Snow and Average Snow for May Thru June (National Weather Service)

Rochester
Highest – 10.9 inches.
Noraml – 0.1

Buffalo –
Highest – 7.9
Normal – 0.0

Binghamton –

Lowest – 0.1

Syracuse –
Highesr – 5.0
Lowest – 0.1

Albany –

I’ll be adding to this post as the days go by and I will be adding any new snow that may fall to the city totals.  If you enjoyed the snow site and the time that goes into keeping it up to date, Please click on the donate buttons to make a donation to the site.  They Help A LOT!!!   You don’t have to join Pay Pal and they do accept most credit cards.  Thanks in advance and it’s been a Fun snow season.  A little boring as far as the amount of snow this season but still Fun.

Rainiest Cities in Golden Snowball Contest

I was finally able to get an update in on the rain totals for the Golden Snowball cities and it’s pretty close. Right now Binghamton, NY has a slight lead over Syracuse, New York. The rest of the cities, Rochester, Albany and Buffalo are only 2-3 inches behind the leader.

Albany, unlike the snow contest, managed to pour themselves out of last place in the rain contest and it’s Buffalo that holds the title right now for being the least rainiest city out of the bunch. Unless you’re a farmer that probably isn’t a bad thing 🙂 Check out the rain totals here.

Almost Time to Start the Golden Snowball Snow Contest

Who is ready for some SNOW? Don’t ya all just hate that 4 letter word 🙂 I’m starting to see SNOW mentioned in some of the forecasts in New York and we all know that it’s just a matter of time. So far only Binghamton is showing a trace of snow. I would love to know when they got it and what it was that you received in Binghamton. Remember that the Golden Snowball contest doesn’t officially get started until one of the cities receive some measurable snowfall. Could this FINALLY be Buffalo’s season to win the Golden Snowball trophy?

The National snow contest started up a week or so ago. Yup, you heard me right. Anchorage, Alaska received 2.8 inches of snow to start the national snow contest up for the 2015-2016 season. There are several cities in that snow contest with at least a trace so far but only Anchorage has some measurable snow so far. Visit The National Snow Contest Here!

Stay Tuned! It won’t be long now and don’t ya just hate me now 🙂

Which Golden Snowball City Gets The Most Rainfall

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that the Golden Snowball contest will start keeping track of the total rainfall that the cities get. I’ve always been curious as to how the cities in the Golden Snowball contest stack up when it come to rain. The rain totals posted here for Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York are the yearly totals so far for 2015.

This should be a fun contest because I doubt that Syracuse will be the favorite like they are in the snow contest. Right now Binghamton is at the top of the Puddle with 26.03 inches of rainfall on the year. Albany is in last place, go figure so it looks like Albany will just carry over from the snow race 😉 I really don’t have a clue as to which city is the favorite other than by going by what the average rain to date is. That shows that most of the cities are pretty close to each other so it should be interesting. We all know what one good thunderstorm can drop so I am guessing the rain contest will probably have several lead changes like the snow contest does.

I am also keeping track of which city records the hottest day for the year, 2015. Rochester has bragging rights to having the highest temperature so far for 2015 which is 92 degrees. The high temp contest should be fun also and it’s starting to look like summer is finally making an appearance this week 😉

Any thoughts or as always any suggestions feel free to post them here or get a hold of me through the contact page. This is all new to me so bear with me as I try to get this up and running. You can check out the cities 2015 rainfall totals here!

Have an Awesome Day Everyone 😉

First off Congrats to Rochester on joining the 100 inches of snow club 🙂 Rochester is the 3rd city in the Golden Snowball contest to join both Syracuse and Buffalo in the 100 inch club. Now keep it going Roc to make this a 3-way race this season.

It was only about 4-5 days ago where it was starting to look pretty good for Syracuse. Syracuse had an almost 10 inch lead on Buffalo but as always and pretty much what happened last season Buffalo stepped it up a notch and has been melting away the lead that Syracuse had.

On March 24th, Syracuse was leading the Golden Snowball contest by 9.5 inches of snow. Right now that lead has slipped down to only a lead of 6.9 inches. Buffalo is just a small storm away from taking the lead over Syracuse. Could this finally be the season that Buffalo gets crowned the champions of the Golden Snowball contest? The cold air is still in the forecast so anything can happen and there is still a lot of time left whether we like it or not 😉

Because of the way the season started with that big lake effect snow event that happened early in the season but missed the Buffalo airport I have to say that I am almost pulling for Buffalo to win this season. OK, reality just set in and of course being from Syracuse that thought just passed by. Go ‘Cuse 😉

Rochester has always been a city that I have a hard time counting out no matter how late in the season it is and how far behind they are. Remember that since the Golden Snowball contest was started up again after a long break, Rochester has been the only city to dethrone Syracuse. Of course. that season was a pretty weird one with all of the cities being wayyyy below their normal seasonal averages.

Speaking of averages Syracuse is about to fall behind their normal snowfall totals to date unless they pick up some snow today. As of yesterday’s snow stats Syracuse is dead on what the normal snowfall to date should be for this time in the season. The normal snowfall to date is 119.1 and right now Syracuse is at 119.1 for this season. Both the National snow contest and the NY Golden Snowball contest tend to be close if Syracuse is close or below their normal snowfall. That’s good news for both Buffalo and Rochester 🙂

The National Snow Contest – All 3 of the CNY/Western cities which are Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester are doing pretty good in the National Snow Contest. Syracuse had the lead but just got knocked down a notch from a city from Massachusetts. Click here for the National Snow Contest, The Golden Snow Globe!

Stay Tuned because this seasons snow race isn’t even close to being over yet, like it or not. Have a Super, Awesome Day Everyone 🙂

First off as always I want to give a Big Thanks to Edwin T. for your recent donation to the site. I know I say this over and over again, but it really does help me out a lot. Thank You for taking the time Edwin, I truly appreciate it 🙂

——————————–

OK, hold off on the betting this is all just for fun. The next couple of days look like it will be kind of quiet for most of the cities so as the snow season is winding down let’s lay some odds for which city will win the 2014-2015 Golden Snowball Contest. Hours of research and handicapping went into laying out the odds so I would take them very seriously when betting with your family and friends. OK, no thinking at all went into the odds and it’s all just for fun 😉

Mother Nature is the only one that knows how much snow lies ahead for all of the Golden Snowball cities, but I feel pretty confident in saying that Albany and probably Binghamton are out of the running now. I know that the NY area still gets snow in April and even sometimes into May, but I don’t see Binghamton making up 30+ inches and I definitely can’t see Albany getting 40+ more inches of snow this season.

I think Rochester still has a shot but only if they start melting away some of Syracuse’s and Buffalo’s snow this week. You may also want to talk to the Snow God 😉 Buffalo still has a decent shot, but the good folks in Buffalo may want to do a snow dance or two 😉 OK, enough already and here are what I believe the odds are as of today, March 24th.

Syracuse – Current Odds — 2 to 1
Buffalo — Current Odds — 4 to 1
Rochester – Current Odds 15 to 1
Binghamton – Current Odds 50 to 1
Albany – Current Odds — Scratched

All in fun and it will be interesting to see if the odds change in the coming weeks ahead. Have an Awesome Day Everyone 🙂

Your input needed – I’m curious if the same conversations go on about snow in your cities that go on here in the Syracuse area.  Mainly Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester.  The argument every year is that is it good to brag about all of the snow we all get or to just keep quiet about it and hope that people don’t see the 4 – 5 foot snowbanks at times when they visit the area.  Is this the same conversation in your city about the snowfall you get?  Don’t brag about our snow.

Feel free to chime in here or at Sean Kirst’s place on the web. Sean, who is a great journalist for the Post Standard and Syracuse.com had a good article in the paper the other day.  It’s about a gentleman from the Syracuse area, Russ Andrews who has been saying that he doen’t think it’s smart bragging or promoting our cities as being one of the snowiest bigger cities in the country on average and even in all of North America.  Russ feels it hurts the city having that kind of reputation.  Keep in mind that Russ Andrews is just making a fun spirited argument and shouldn’t be seen as a bad guy 😉  You can read the article at http://www.syracuse.com/kirst/index.ssf/2013/02/amid_winterfest_russ_andrews_a.html

Sean and I have seen eye to eye on this since we first met and we both believe we should be promoting the Hell out of the snow our cities get.  Let me also add that Sean is the main reason that the Golden Snowball contest was revived to what it is today with his articles, conversations about the snow and so on.

Sean, like myself vision drawing people to the area because of the amount of snow we normally receive each winter season.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, It snows here in Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester and no matter how hard some of the people in Syracuse want to hide it by shoveling it under the curbs it’s not going to work.

What needs to be done in my opinion is to bring the snow lovers from out of town into town because of the high amounts of snow we receive.  Open up some of our state owned land in the area for snowmobilers, find a place where skiers can ski in the area besides the nearby ski slopes that we already have.  Open up the state fair grounds for the snowmobilers and try to bring in the top sledders around the country for either races or the extreme sports shows.  Make Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester a stop on their tour every year.  Open the roadways (some of them)  for a weekend and let the sledders use them.  I miss the days when all you heard during a good storm were sleds cruising up and down the streets.

There is so much country side land around all of the Golden Snowball cities that it wouldn’t be hard to promote cross country skiing.  Look at all of the lakes around central and upstate New York that would be perfect to draw in people to take advantage of the frozen lakes for ice fishing.  Have a couple fishing tournaments to draw out of towners to visit our areas.  Fill the hotels with fun filled winter sporting events.  Come up with something fun and different each weekend for the snow lovers to draw them to the area.  Open up some of the bigger hills for the kids to go sledding on.

I was reading a few years back about how well Quebec City does with their annual winter carnival they have.  I think the last I looked they were drawing almost a million people to their area each year including a lot of out of towners including snow enthusiast’s from the United States.  No doubt it’s a big investment, I think it was over a million dollars spent on the event but they are bringing in millions of dollars to their local businesses on that investment.  Sure it would take a few years to get it going as good as Quebec city does with their winter carnival but in the long run if done right it would be well worth it.

Do people from other states really like snow though.  I just looked at my visitor stats from the National Snow contest to see how many visitors were coming to the site.  In the last 30 days goldensnowglobe.com had over 40,000 visitors from pretty much every state in the country.  So I would have to say that yes, people from all over like snow.  Build and they will come 😉

Have an awesome weekend all and make sure you check out Sean’s latest article at http://www.syracuse.com/kirst/index.ssf/2013/02/amid_winterfest_russ_andrews_a.html and don’t be too hard on Russ 😉
