Buffalo continues to chip slowly away at Syracuse’s lead in the Golden Snowball contest pulling within less than 6 inches from them. Not a lot to add but an inch here and there adds up while waiting for some heavy white stuff to come down. Looking at the stats, both Buffalo and Syracuse are getting closer to their averages for this time in the snow season.

A good part of New York is under a storm watch for Tuesday and Wednesday. A watch means it could happen. When you see a warning for your area that means it’s pretty much gonna happen. The temperatures from what I am reading will be a deciding factor as to whether it’s snow or a winter mix. As the day goes on most likely NOAA will have it narrowed down. Most likely all the GSB cities will see something from this storm if it pans out and Binghamton might have a chance to do some catching up to the top 3 cities. Stay tuned as more details come out on this storm, which I believe is the first storm of the season for the GSB city’s. I could be wrong on that though ; )

Also WeatherT in the forum just posted a video he took from up North. He mentions that the snow has settled quite a bit but the video is still pretty impressive. Check it out at http://www.geocities.com/tsforecast/ Below is the storm watch from NOAA!

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING.SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN TUESDAY AFTERNOON…AND BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES TUESDAY NIGHT. THE SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY BEFORE TAPERING OFF TO SNOW SHOWERS DURING THE EARLY EVENING.BY THE TIME THE SNOW ENDS WEDNESDAY NIGHT… 10 TO 15 INCHES OF SNOW ACCUMULATION IS POSSIBLE.MUCH UNCERTAINTY REMAINS REGARDING THE PATH AND TIMING OF THE STORM. LATER STATEMENTS WILL BETTER DETAIL THE EXACT TIMING AND PROJECTED SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WITH THIS STORM.A WINTER STORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT BECAUSE HEAVY SNOW IS APOSSIBILITY… BUT NOT A CERTAINTY. AT THIS TIME… THERE IS APOTENTIAL FOR SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 7 INCHES OR MORE. TRAVEL CONDITIONS COULD BECOME HAZARDOUS… SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TRAVEL IN THE WATCH AREA.STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO ALL-HAZARDS OR YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS FOR FURTHER DETAILS OR UPDATES FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE…OR VISIT OUR INTERNET WEB SITE ATHTTP://WEATHER.GOV/BINGHAMTON.

I’ve been listening to Pat St.Claire on CNN Radio and she has been mentioning the attempt that Syracuse will be making on February 15th to break the most snow angels record at one place. You can listen to Pat St Claire on CNN Radio at http://www.cnn.com/audio/radio/winmedia.html You might also be hearing an interview from someone locally if all goes well.

Don’t forget to show up for the record breaking attempt this coming Thursday at the Frank Salanger Athletic Complex at Sunnycrest Park on Robinson Street next to Henninger High School and dress warm. More information on the event and the Syracuse winterfest events at http://syracusewinterfest.com/wacooper/BrochureTotal2007word.pdf The link will open in a PDF file.

Syracuse managed to sled into first place again for only the second time this season. After a blustery, wind whipping day with snow falling most of the day Syracuse picked up 9.3 inches once again over takeing the king of the snow hill. It’s also the biggest lead that Syracuse has had this season and the question is will they be able to hold on to it?

Steve from the forum and also from Buffalo states that the lake is pretty much frozen over and what ever isn’t will most likely be by the end of the weekend. I’m not convinced that Buffalo is ready to lie down yet though. We’ve had some weird weather the past year or so and I think it will continue so my guess is we will still see a back and forth lead right down to the finish line. Rochester is definitely a city to be concerned about. They still haven’t gotten it going like they can but they will. They continue to add up some inches and will right into Spring and beyond.

Albany??? Forget about em as far as snow goes! Kudo’s to Albany though. They are sending some plows and help up to the north. No sense in all that equiptment just sitting around getting rusted. With the snow or make that lack of that Albany has had this year they could of just shoveled the roads ๐Ÿ™‚ Why waste the gas with the plows?

I don’t know what to say about Binghamton. So far they have been the biggest disappointment and surprise this snow season and they are killing my prediction as to how the cities would end up this year. Most of my predictions were based on a couple of Nor’ Easter’s hitting us this season which is why I had Bingo in 3rd place. I suppose it’s still a possibilty and remeber the blizzard of 93 hit on March 12 – 13 so it’s really not a matter of time running out but they need to get something going just to try and keep up with the top 3 city’s. Have a Great Weekend All!

Below are some snow stats just to show you how we are doing so far compared to last seasons snowfall on this date. Notice Buffalo and Rochester are some where near last seasons numbers. Syracuse is pretty far off last seasons numbers mostly becuase of the snow that fell in Syracuse in December a season ago. Binghamton and Albany are way off on their totals. What’s this all mean? Beats me, I was just bored ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have a great weekend all!

Snowball City This Season Last Season Norm to Date
Albany 6.5 25.1 40.6
Binghamton 15.0 47.8 51.4
Buffalo 60.8 51.3 69.2
Rochester 44.0 48.9 63.3
Syracuse 68.4 85.0 76.0

There are so many unbelievable pictures of the major snow event that is going on still up in Oswego, Fulton, Mexico, Parish and a lot of other towns and cities between Syracuse and Watertown. Channel 9, WSYR has been having people send in their snow storm pictures and they have quite a few posted at their website at TV 9 Syracuse They also have some raw footage of the lake effect that has and is still pounding them. Hopefully they will get a good break soon. Albany who has a solid 6+ inches so far is sending some plows and other equipment to help out with the snow.

NYCO, whose blog keeps track of what’s going on in the CNY area has a good video on the Silent Edge site showing some white out conditions in Palaski. Check it out at http://www.silent-edge.org/wp/index.php She also has a link to the USA Today weather guys section that has a mention of the Golden Snowball contest and a couple others worth checking out. You can check out The Weather Guys section at USA Today which has some great weather info and facts with a fun spin to it at http://blogs.usatoday.com/weather/

There is a possibilty that come tonight or tomorrow that the lead might be switching again. Syracuse has picked up enough to barely slide by Buffalo by a few inches depending on how Buffalo’s snow stats come in. The lake effect that has been hammering the Oswego and Fulton area’s has finally drifted south enough to Syracuse and has been hanging around awhile now. No where’s near as intense as it has been up north but still some good bursts of snow and a steady light snow. Hopefully it will stay to the South for awhile not to put Syracuse in the lead, but to give the North a break. They have to be past the point of exustion by now and my guess is that the snow plow drivers and tow trucks haven’t been getting much sleep the last week. Have a great weekend and for you Northerners, lets hope it’s a snow free weekend.

Oh, one last thing. Wish me luck on the new lottery Raffle to Riches. Lets try that mind thing where we all think winner, kind of like the Super Bowl ๐Ÿ˜‰ The drawing took place this morning and if you were one of the fools like me that bought a ticket, Good Luck!

Below is a Cute story that has been going around the internet
for a couple of years now about the weather in Good Ole New York State and is one of my favorites. It makes me wonder if someone from the south of Buffalo or the north of Syracuse isn’t thinking this right now. Author unknown!

Dear Diary

August 12th – Moved to our new home in New York. It is so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic, can hardly wait to see snow covering them.

October 14th – New York is the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves are all turned colors with shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful mountains and saw some deer. They were so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animal on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.

November 11th – Deer season will start soon. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon.

December 2nd – It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white snow. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came by, we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place, I love New York.

December 12th – More snow last night. I love it. The snowplow did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here in New York.

December 19th – More snow last night. I couldn’t get out of the driveway to get to work. I am exhausted from shoveling. Dumb snowplow.

December 22nd – More STUPID snow last night. I’ve got blisters on my hands from shoveling and I think the snowplow hides around the curve and waits until I’m done shoveling the driveway. The JERK!

December 25th – Merry Christmas. More STUPID snow! If I ever get my hands on that STUPID JERK who drives the snowplow, I swear I’ll kill the driver. Don’t know why they don’t use more salt on the roads to melt the darn ice.

December 27th – More snow fell last night. I’ve been inside for three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that snowplow goes through. Can’t go anywhere; car’s stuck in a mountain of snow. The weatherman says to expect another 10″ of snow again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of snow 10″ is?

December 28th – The darned weatherman was wrong again! We got 34″ of snow this time. At this rate it won’t melt before the summer. The snowplow got stuck in the road and that STUPID JERK had the nerve to come to the door and ask to borrow my shovel. After I told him I had broken six shovels already shoveling all the snow he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one over his STUPID head!

January 4th – Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get some food and on the way back a darned deer ran in front of the car and I hit it. It did about $3000.00 dollars worth of damage to the car. Those beasts should be killed. Wish the hunters would have gotten them all last November.

May 3rd – Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusting out from the STUPID salt they put all over the roads.

May 10th – Moved to Florida. I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that god forsaken state of New York.

Gotta Love New York!!!

There is a pretty good conversation with some good pictures going on in the Golden Snowball forum right now. Check out the posts and pictures at http://goldensnowball.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=393 WeatherT posted some pictures that his brother in law took from New Haven. There are also some good maps and some good information about when the lake Erie freeze over and Tony has been keeping us updated on some of the totals from up north and the numbers just since Saturday blow all of our cities season totals away. This is one of the biggest snow events that I can remember. WeatheT by the way has a good site with great snow stats and info for the Fulton area. Check his site out at http://www.geocities.com/tsforecast/

New snow reports are out:

Oswego: 62″
Mexico: 57″
Parish: 54″

You can also checkout a picture of the Generals Sabre’s hockey pre-game festivities and Tug Hill Tina from the Champion area came up with a phrase that I love “it’s lake effecting pretty good” and it will be a keeper here at GSB. Tina also mentions she’s starting to get a little battle weary from all the shoveling.

The general put together a video that I believe is from his work parking lot that is time lapsed showing some lake effect snow from February 3rd, 2007 and it’s pretty cool.

Below is another video from youtube.com showing the Buffalo blizzard of 1977 which gives you an idea how bad that storm was. It’s from the book written by Erno Rossi. Visit www.whitedeath.com for more information and to get your own copy of the book and extended, full length DVD by Erno Rossi.
