Well I do enjoy tooting my horn as the NE.Wx snowfall guesstimator Rookie Of The Year last year and for (well in my opinion), “nailing” two of the five GSB cities I made predictions for last season. As the snow looks to start flying this week, I’ll issue my totally unreliable and more then likely way off predictions for this season.

Here are my predictions vs actual for last year. Use your own judgement as to take stock in my predictions or to know better then trusting me.

Albany – 70 – 45.9 – (+34.4%)
Bingo – 95 – 78.6 – (+17.3%)
Buffalo – 120 – 88.9 – (+25.9%)
Rochester – 105 – 107.2 – (-2.1%)
Syracuse – 140 – 140.2 – (-0.1%)

Let’s see here…. My 07-08 GBS Predictions:
Albany – 65
Bingo – 85
Buffalo – 105
Rochester – 95
Syracuse – 125

Yes I hate to give Syracuse the win AGAIN, but it’s hard to bet against Syracuse losing this contest.

NOW!!! Onto some good news (well good news for some of us), the lake effect machine looks to get going for the first time this season. While it looks like mainly a rain/thunderstorm event right now, wet flakes will be flying for Buffalo, and Rochester and could drop a trace to a few tenths, meanwhile Syracuse has the chance to maybe see a an inch as the bands do their dance to the south and the air gets a bit cooler. The higher elevations south of Buffalo, and the Tug Hill, stand the best chance for some snow this week, with 3-6inches likely, and maybe a few isolated 6inch+ reports. Of course who really knows what will happen, I remember hearing a forecast just like this last year for a rain event, and the next day we had two feet of snow, SO…..

Hopefully everyone is ready to officially start another season, and is ready to deal with what mother nature has to offer. I’ll extend an invitation to any lurkers on the main page to stop by the forum boards here and join the rest of us in more detailed conversation about the happenings weather wise across upstate New York.

Depressing or what??? It’s time to set the clocks back an hour tonight and for some reason it depresses me because I know whats coming our way soon. Most likely it will be getting darker an hour earlier too. Hey, you heard that first here! No one else is dumb enough to make that comment 🙂 Don’t forget to change your batteries in your smoke and fire alarms like the fire dept. recommends because it’s easy to remember each year by doing it when you set the clocks back.

I still need to get all the stats in the chart at the top in order which will be done in the next few days. I’ll also be adding the new poll questions soon. Last season’s questions were who would win the GSB contest and should the Syracuse Winterfest be named the Golden Snowball Festival. For some unknown reason Syracuse cleaned up in the first poll question winning 76% of the votes. The poll is of course unscientific but it will be interesting to see what the results will be this season. I’m not putting my money on DaCuse this winter.

As for the winterfest question, that was a close one with the yeses barely winning by 33 votes. Maybe we will have to ask Mrs Mahoney and Mr Magnarelli which way they would vote before we cast a vote for them come this Tuesdays election. It would be interesting just to hear what they have to say yet alone find out if they even heard of the contest. JMO of course! Last years poll results can be seen at http://www.goldensnowball.com/2006-2007-poll.htm If anyone has any suggestions as to what to poll this season just reply to this post and it will be considered.

Look for a couple of changes this season at the website. One of them is that We may be having another person help out with the daily blogging duties and the chances are it will be The General who is well know here at Goldensnowball.com and is from the Buffalo area. People have been begging for me to let someone else blog because of how boring I am so I finally gave in. The General, rel name Steve will liven things up with his normal forecasts that are way off, fun snowman pictures decapitating Syracuse snowmen heads and more 🙂 Ok in reality I have been thinking about doing this the last year or so and finally figured out a way to do it and it should be a lot of fun getting another cities perspective on the contest. Who knows, maybe it will bring Buffalo a little luck too. Ok, Enough said and have a great end of the weekend all!

I thought I said I would write about the 2006 – 2007 snow season part 2 wrap up the next day. Come on, I only missed by a Season (summer) Umm, Where did I leave off???

Around March 5th and 6th Syracuse finally hit their average yearly snow totals which after the way the season started might of surprised some people that they would even hit by the end of the season. Rochester also hit their average on March 19th just a few days before Spring. We got a mix of everything in March including some long awaited warmer days. Of course St. Patty’s day was a typical cold and windy day.

I think the big news was that Syracuse’s basketball team got ^&%%*$% by the NCAA committee but that was then and I’m over it now. NOT!!! Other than that it was pretty much a typical month of March in good Ole CNY.

April brought a mix of everything also including snow on the ground for Easter if my memory serves me right. Eric sent in a good picture from Easter at

http://goldensnowball.com/uploaded_images/erics-easter-snowman-(2)-710820.jpg

I thought Buffalo and Binghamton might of been able to at least pull off their averages but both just missed unless NOAA updated last seasons stats. I’ll check on that tomorrow. Sure I will 🙂 As for Albany??? Enough said! About a half a foot of snow fell on some of the Golden Snowball cities between the 15th and 16th of April and by this time even the Oracle was ready to say uncle. Enough was enough already. Pretty much after that things started to go uphill weather wise and my posts started to slack off which mean only one thing. Warm weather was ahead and that it was.

I hope everyone had a super summer and with the decent mix of weather most likely you did. I personally like the 70 degree temperatures and this summer there was something for everyone including mild temperatures and the hot temperatures. Most of the weekends were perfect and rain free. I think I just heard that this October is one of the warmest on record. It will be interesting to see how the 2007 – 2008 snow season turns out. With that said I’ll be updating the site and stats in preparation for the new season in the coming days!

LET the 2007 – 2008 SNOW SEASON BEGIN!
(April would be a good begin date for me)

Just a quick mid summer pop in to mention a fundraiser that is going on this weekend for a great young man, Joe MacKool. Joe has been struggling with Cystic Fibrosis all his life. The past year Joe has endured some very trying times health wise and to be honest we’re all lucky that he has pulled through and is actually on his way to recovering from a double lung transplant that took place at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. I’m sure most of you can understand the expenses that have accumulated for the MacKool Family. The operation, expensive trips back and forth to New York city and so on. Enough said about that.

Friends and family have been organizing a fundraiser for Joey to help offset the expenses. The fundraiser will be this coming Sunday at the Pepsi Building at the New York State Fairgrounds. Ticket donations are $15.00 at the door for a max of $60.00 for a family of 5 or more. Children 10 and under are admitted free. There will be plenty of raffles to be sold along with entertainment and just a good ole time to be had by everyone. Hopefully a band or DJ will come through so I don’t have to be the entertainment. Although I have been told I do a good Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley. So anyways if your looking for something to do this coming Sunday and to help a good cause, please feel free to attend the fundraiser.

On another note if you can’t attend and would like to make a cash donation you can do so online at www.joemackool.com . We also need donations of prizes for the raffles and there is information at www.joemackool.com about that also. If your a business owner and would like to offer your products or services please see the contact info at www.joemackool.com for information or you can just leave a comment here and we can arrange for a pickup. Please keep in mind that no donation is ever too small and all donations are appreciated. A huge thanks in advance for your kindness and it is deeply appreciated.

Oh, yes I know part 2 of the wrap up from last season is still over due and I know how much you all love and most likely must miss my updated during the long summer months as we patiently wait for our favorite season, winter to arrive. NOT!!! Have a great summer all.

It’s a Wrap! The 2006 – 2007 Golden Snowball Trophy once again goes to Syracuse. This was by far one of the strangest seasons I can remember since keeping the stats for the contest. Buffalo gets the early jump only to be snowplowed over by Syracuse and Rochester. It will be interesting to see some of the records that were broken this snow season. All in all it was a fun season though with many new people visiting, new forum members and the new blog was fun hearing some of the responses from around CNY and the US. Even and email from a former Syracusan from China along with many other emails. Here’s a quick look back at the season.

Buffalo set some records with the freak snowstorm they had in October which gave them a big jump on the other 4 Golden Snowball cities. A snow pounding of 22.6 inches on October 13th and a lead that lasted for quite sometime. Buffalo actually held the lead for most of the season, about 4 months, starting in October and giving it up for the first time of the season on January 31st to Syracuse.

November was a bust as far as snow goes. Buffalo added a little bit to their lead to go ahead of the rest of us by over 2 feet. Rochester showed something like half an inch while Syracuse, Binghamton and Albany were still only showing a trace of snow for the season. The story of November 2006 was rain and alot of it. By the end of November Binghamton was only a couple days of setting a record. The record for the latest start of a snow season without any measurable snow.

The start of December wasn’t much different. On Decmber 1st Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse broke the rainiest day record for the 1st of December. Buffalo received 1.21 inches, Rock City received 1.29 inches breaking the daily record dating all the way back to 1910. Binghamton set the record for the latest measurable snow in a season on December 2nd. Buffalo continued to add to it’s lead setting a date record of 5.4 inches of snow on December 4th. Syracuse finally covered the grass but less than 2 inches fell. I think this was about the time we started bugging NYCO at Silent-Edge to bring out the Snow God to see if that would help bring some of the white fluffy stuff to the Golden Snowball cities. Right around December 7 – 8 Syracuse made a move and slid by Rochester to take second place over. December 21st something cool took place. A press conference awarding the trophy to Syracuse from the previous year. I gt to meet Dennis Brogan and Sean Kirst for the first time. A quick news conference where Dennis handed me the trophy in which I in turn handed it over to Jeff Brown, the DPW head man in charge of all the people who keeps the roads in tip top shape in Syracuse. It was also the first chance for a lot of people to see what a fool I really am. Pictures of the press conference and Golden Snowball Trophy. The worst thing that happened in December was that we had a White Christmas. Something to me is always missing when the grass is green during the Christmas holidays. To sum December up, It was a Bust also!

Come January the ski resorts and snowmobilers had to be in a depressed state of mind. Not to mention the ice fishers and snow plowers. One of the busiest seasons, Christmas just passed by with no snow to play in and no money to be made. I made my snow city predictions and was way off this season. Only 2 out of 5 right. Not too good for the so called Oracle of the Golden Snowball contest. Remember most of my season predictions were based on more coastal storms than we had. Plus a couple of the Nor’ Easters were in the form of rain which hurt Binghamton’s snow stats on the season.

1st Place – Syracuse
2nd Place – Buffalo
3rd Place – Binghamton
4th Place – Rochester
Dead Last – Albany (my most confident prediction go figure)

January was starting out slow and it was time for drastic measures. Yup, it was time for the Snow Dance to take place out of desperation. On January 7th the snow ritual took place at an undisclosed location and time. The ritual dance is a well sought after event that has never been captured on film although many stake outs have taken place in hopes of capturing the Snowman making a complete idiot of himself. This year I could of sworn that I even saw the National Geographic trucks staking out my house. By now we had tried reverse psychology on Mother Nature, the Snow God was threatened to be locked back up in the closet and a few other things in hopes of bringing snow to the great Golden Snowball cities. Two days after the snow dance was performed the north started receiving snow and Syracuse had their biggest snowfall of the season, over 8 inches. This late in the season things still were looking pretty lame. At the beginning of the snow season some of us were talking over at Sean’s place on the web at http://www.syracuse.com/kirst/ about challenging some of the cities in Canada like Quebec City to see who receives the most snow in the 2006 – 2007 season. Quebec City is one of the snowiest cities in the world with a population over 100,000 along with Syracuse. After the way things were going into January the talk kind of slowed down. Eric who emails me some great info from time to time mentioned that when he took his daughter back to college on Jan 18th Syracuse was only right around 12 inches on the season. Definitely not looking like the larger city snow leader of the United States and not even close to looking like a world leader.

Still in the month of January and finally the snow season has begun. From Jan 9th off and on the snow totals were starting to add up for a few of the cities and Syracuse was finally making a run at Buffalo. Also some cool stats came out at http://reinventcny.tripod.com/ by Chris a stats lover that gave us a great break down of cities who receive the most snowfall by population. For the middle of January Syracuse made several attempts to take over the king of snow hills from Buffalo only to be pushed down the hill several times. No way was Buffalo willing to give up the top of the hill.

Two of my favorite posts of the season were started up by Steve Madsen a Buffalo snow lover and big Sabres fan. He sent some pictures to me and they were great. Steve goes by the alias of The General and the postings are at http://goldensnowball.com/2007/01/man-wanted-in-connection-with-snow-coup.html and at http://goldensnowball.com/2007/01/shhh-syracuse-is-only-1-inch-away_30.html . Buffalo might be our arch enemy when it comes to the snow contest but they are a great bunch of fun people and made this season a lot of fun. Steve also comes up with some great stats on the Golden Snowball cities. Thanks Steve for all the help again this season. WOW, this is getting long! Finally on the last day of January Syracuse charges the hill to push Buffalo from the top and slides into the lead. For the first time this season Buffalo is no longer the leader.

Finally February and all hell was breaking out. Most of us were so far from our normal yearly snowfall stats still that most people didn’t think any of the cities with the exception of Buffalo would hit our normals. Well February changed that. Phil the groundhog didn’t see his shadow and predicted an early Spring. The Oracle of the contest put on a few pounds this winter and couldn’t miss his shadow, even in the dark. I didn’t bye groundhog Phil’s predictions this year. We were way too far behind the normal totals and this is CNY – Upstate New York and for those of us who have lived here all our lives know that sooner or later everything evens out, meaning more snow was to come in the next couple of months. Buffalo slipped back into the lead at the beginning of February and the North country was about to get pounded and pounded and pounded by snow. Something like 10 days in a row of heavy snowfall for the normal snowbelt cities like Fulton, Oswego, Tug Hill to name a few. So much snow that all of the national media began to cover it. So much snow that I actually turned into a sissy man and said “Nah, keep it up to the North”. 8 – 10 feet is a bit more than I want to shovel in that short of a time.

Wow, this is a long final season wrap up and will be continued tomorrow. I’m off to a double header softball game between Herkimer and OCC College.

End of Part 1 🙂
