Good luck saying that title 5 times fast! 🙂
This is my first post as a contributor to the site, so I figured what better way to celebrate than a look back at the last storm.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm produced the fourth highest snowfall totals in any four day period on record. Below are the top 4 four day totals, with the last date in the four day period in parenthesis.
44.6 inches (2/1/1966)
44.5 inches (3/14/1993)
44.3 inches (1/31/1966)
43.2 inches (12/8/2010)
I find it a bit interesting that the three higher amounts are all in the later portion of the season. So, in other words, this the highest amount of snow Syracuse has ever had in a four day period this early in the season.
It was also the 6th highest 5 day total, and the 5th highest 3 day total.
It snowed continuously from 6:16 AM December 4th to 8:10 AM December 8th. That’s a total of 97 hours and 54 minutes.
Oh yeah, more snow is expected toward the later part of the weekend, and the early part of next week.
Is Buffalo’s snowiest season for all GSB cities (199.4 in 1976-1977) in trouble? Obviously, it’s way too early to tell, but Syracuse is already about a quarter of the way there.
By the way, Winter has not officially begun yet. That’s December 21st, almost 2 weeks away.
Are we not going to get an update about the storm that is affecting us?
NICE PRESS!
Welcome back ZR :))
Pam and Mike, it was a fun day downtown 🙂
We forgot to state the obvious Patrick, this article again confirms your " celebrity status " and you've taken that status from local to national. 4 feet of snow by December 10 – what possible encore could be in store for Syracuse? or Upstate NY for that matter? records will tumble….
Cousins Pam and Mike.
Congrats Patrick with being touted as a " National Expert " on the Golden Snowball Award in the paper today. You certainly get all our votes. Keep up the good work! http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2010/12/photos_of_the_day_december_10_1.html
Cousins Pam and Mike!
Hey Pat, that's pretty nice. Thanks!
Eric, that is a great question. As I recall, that 42.9 total is just the blizzard, which lasted about 2 days. So, if there was snow a day or 2 before or after the blizzard, it would be added on to the four day total, but not the blizzard total itself. That is my best guess as to where that 1.6 difference is.
Some interesting stats Stephen and we were wondering earlier today if we set some kind of record like that.
Hey, Sean put his article out. It's at

Your name is in print online but because I wasn't home earlier it didn't make it to the paper tomorrow. My bad 🙁
I have a question about the blizzard of 93 storm totals. I saw that 44.5 inch storm total also on the channel 3 news. as I remember, it was a 42.9 inch storm total. my weather almanac has it down as 42.9 and I still have the original post standard front page that says we are the snow king 42.9. where did the extra 1.6 inches come from?
It was great to get back to Upstate NY tonight and see the big snows first hand. These storms are what legends come from and the media was all over this one. Saw A LOT of coverage on this even down in Philly all week. Got about 2' at my house back in ROC and the wife kept up with it so it was good to be home. Congrats to Cuse (and everyone else as there were impressive numbers from all over) on such a great storm and look forward to the next.
