  1. Tom, what Stephen said. Look to the left and I believe you should find those stats. Great job on that page by the Stephen.

ZR, I was wondering what happened to you. Not like you to not post during some awesome snow 🙂

Charles, thanks for all that info. It's always nice to learn 😉

Stephen, I spent part of the day at the Post Standard. Should be an article out tomorrow I believe.

  2. Syracuse is up to 46.6 inches for the year now.

    Rochester: 27.6
    Bing: 22.9
    Buffalo: 17.7
    Albany…we wont discuss you

This has been an amazing year so far

  3. Checking in Pat! Down here in Philly for a few days so have been quiet on here but heading home tonight and can't wait to get to Cuse and home to see all the snow. You guys put a serious lead on but don't count out the ROC yet!

  4. I just noticed, you have all time snowfall amounts posted but dont have totals for the other end…lowest recorded total amounts for each city…are those available anywhere?

  5. In reference to the lake effect snow bands and radar it has to do with the elevation of the cloud height and the elevation of the radar beam

If you are looking at the Bighamton radar site you will see the lake band extends right through the city but if you are looking at other radar sites near there you wont see it and that is because the cloud height for the snowfall is at 2800 ft whereas from the Albany Radar the radar beam is at 10k ft also from the Buffalo radar the radar beam is at 16k ft and from the radar in Watertown the radar beam is at 11k ft so when you are looking at Bing you need to make sure you are looking at the right radar to pick up the snow

  6. Charles, wishful thinking or is that how you're seeing it :)) Is that the storm that's coming from the northwest that everyone is talking about?

Anon, I'm just outside of east Syracuse and close to Minoa in a town called Fremont. Right off of 290 if you know the area. I think that would be a little southeast from you.

Patrick, I'm thinking we may get a break sometime tomorrow in the Syracuse area. Last season a lot of the snow bands were to the west and east of us. This season they seem to be several narrow bands, but are setting up over or close enough for us to cash in.

As for Binghamton I'm not sure but pretty sure it is the lake effect snow reaching them. This cold air has gone all the way down to the south reaching as far as Florida I believe. I was told by someone from NOAA that although the bands might not look like they are stretching down farter that they are. I think he mentioned it was something to do with the radar not picking it up because of the elevation or the mountains. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me could answer you better.

  7. Our first clear day here in ROC. We have about two feet in the city, but most people don't really seem to mind, at least yet. As usually, Syracuse has the early lead, but I think that could change.

I think Rochester is getting a milder version of what Syracuse is getting. What exactly is it that seems to give Cuse more snow for the same event? And where is all of Binghamptons snow coming from, they have got to be too far to the south to be getting lake effect. I keep hearing about this storm coming later this weekend, anyone hearing anything?

  8. Where you located in Syracuse? I live on the north side about a mile from the stadium and a mile from mall, (near Spring and Turtle). The video looked like North Syracuse.

  9. Yes it can get better for snow lovers

A heavy deformation band of snow can set up right over Rochester as the storm pulls warmer air in so that Syracuse gets rain while the deformation band quickly tapers as it heads westward to give Buffalo little to no snow… then as the winds turn around to the N they actually head NE so that Rochester has a long fetch of lake ontario and Syracuse gets no snow from lake effect and then Buffalo again gets little to none due to distance from the lake NE of there.. then Rochester can make its move on the other cities 🙂
