Syracuse Slides Closer to Buffalo, Snow Lead Under 4 Inches

Updated 2/20 7:00 PM – Syracuse continues their snowball assault on Buffalo and are now only 2.1 inches away from catching them. This weekend is going to be really interesting. Stay Safe All and Have a Great Night 🙂

Syracuse has been climbing the snow hill this last week and cut Buffalo’s lead down to just a little over 3 inches now. I don’t think Buffalo is going to give up the top spot without putting up a good snowball fight though.

This season Syracuse was missing just about every snowflake that was in the area. It seems now that they may have put some gas in the Lake Machine (Ontario Lake) because it seems to be working now. It’s looking a lot better for Syracuse which around February 6th was trailing Buffalo by 17 inches. What a difference February is making in both the Golden Snowball and The National snow contest, the Golden Snow Globe.

I believe this is the closest Syracuse has been to Buffalo since around January 8th when Syracuse was tied with Buffalo at 34.0 inches in the snow contest for a day but then fell 3 inches behind the next day. Buffalo is no way doomed and they keep adding to their snow totals too and are just an inch shy of hitting the 100 inch mark. It will be interesting to see which city hits it first. I’m gonna go with Buffalo I think. Then again as soon as I type my prediction Mother Nature does her thing to prove me wrong. I don’t think she likes me too much 🙁

Rochester is still lagging behind pretty good but I am sure they will get into the contest before it’s over. They are in the same rut as Syracuse was for most of the season. Hopefully they climb out of it and at least make this a 3 way snow race.

Buffalo Still Leads Golden Snowball Contest, Syracuse Closing In

Buffalo is still hanging tough at the top and even with the lake frozen isn’t really showing any sign of slowing down yet. Syracuse has once again closed the gap on the lead that Buffalo has but not by a lot. It’s been Buffalo pretty much the entire season so far sitting at the top of the snow hill 🙂

Albany WAS keeping up with the Big 3 Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester but is slowly fading away into the Horizon. I’m a little surprised because they were doing pretty good with the storms that came through but haven’t been able to cash in enough on the last couple of storms. I can’t say that they are out for the season but I think they will be on the disabled list pretty soon 😉 Sorry Albany but being behind almost 30 inches right now (27.5) it’s not looking too good. Of course every time I say something like that Mother Nature slaps me and proves me wrong 🙁

Syracuse has managed to melt away about 7 inches from the lead that Buffalo did have a little while back and I think the 10 inch lead that Buffalo has right now is going to keep melting away. I think by the end of this weekend only a couple of inches will separate Buffalo and Syracuse with maybe, just maybe me saying Buffalo is now chasing Syracuse. Then again I am from Da’Cuse so that could be just wishful thinking 😉

Rochester isn’t through yet and I don’t think Binghamton is either. It seemed like earlier in the season Binghamton was able to catch some of the snow that moved to the south but recently they have been missing all of the snow that’s been around. Rochester was able to cash in on the last storm and won that snowball fight. There is still a lot of time left in the season for Rochester to melt away some of the lead that Buffalo and Syracuse have over the Roc but in a week or two they may want to start shipping in the snow making machines as backup.. Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse are all in the Top 10 right now in the National Snow Contest. Buffalo is representing New York the best right now sitting in the #3 slot on the snow Mountains. Rochester Wins Latest Snowball Fight, Buffalo’s Lead Shrinks

All of the numbers from the recent snowstorm are in and Rochester won this snowball fight by a few flakes. What was I even thinking when I mentioned that Rochester could go to last place 🙁 All of the cities snow storm totals are below and the good news is that a few of us gained on Buffalo this round.

Syracuse not too long ago was behind by around 17 inches and as of the last update are behind a little less than a foot now. Rochester has been climbing up and we know it’s just a matter of time when they make their move. Well they actually did this last storm..

Buffalo’s lead in the snow contest has melted away a little more and I think with soooo much time left in the season it’s going to end up really close again this season. Looking at the snow stats and the way the snow has been falling this season, especially this month I think all of the cities have a shot at winning. Yes, including Albany, NY Go Figure..

The snow stats below are from Saturday thru Monday and as always don’t forget about my fuzzy math when I start adding up snowflakes and crunching numbers 😉 Rochester won this snowball fight by 1.4 inches over Syracuse. See, having the airport a little to the North does hurt Syracuse more than you think… I really thought Albany was going to win this round thinking they would get around 14 inches. WTG Rochester 🙂

Rochester – 2/7 = 0.9, 2/8 = 5.5, 2/9 = 6.5 Total = 12.9
Syracuse – 2/7 = 2.1 2/8 = 3.6, 2/9 = 5.8 Total = 11.5
Albany – 2/7 = 0.9, 2/8 = 3.0, 2/9 = 6.1 Total = 10.0
Buffalo – 2/7 = 1.0, 2/8 = 2.4, 2/9 = 2.7 Total = 6.1
Binghamton – 2/7 = 0.8 2/8 = 0.8 2/9 = 2.4 Total = 4.0

Ut Snow, Rochester Slips to Last Place In Snow Contest

Updated 2/4 6:30 PM – I just got the latest update in for all of the Golden Snowball cities. Albany is not reporting this last update so it’s hard to tell if Rochester snowed it’s way out of last place or not. It comes down to whether Albany has any new snowfall to report. I’ll post new snow updates as they come in from the National Weather Service. For now we’ll take The Roc out of last place 😉

I finally got a chance to update the snow totals from this latest round of snowfall and it looks like Rochester has dropped to the bottom of the snow hill again. I’ve also been seeing some controversy after reading around and looking at some of the snow totals from all of the areas all around Rochester.

You all know me and that I stay out of the controversy. OK, most of my friends and family will disagree with that last statement but I do try to on the site anyways 😉 I came across one snow map that was showing all of the cities surrounding the Rochester area yesterday as I was looking around for some snow stats and they were all higher than what is being reported. I’ll leave it at that 😉

Here are some totals from yesterday and also some of the storm totals for the 2 days. As always keep in mind my fuzzy math 😉 All of the cities set a date record for yesterday except for Rochester. The first number is the new record and the last is the old record and the year it was set.

Date Snow Records That Were Broken Yesterday 2/3

Albany – 11.9 R – 5.5 1892
Binghamton – 8.8 R – 6.8 1956
Syracuse – 8.8 R – 7.0 1990
Buffalo – 8.2 R – 8.0 2013

Snow Storm Totals for All Cities From 2/1 thru 2/2

Buffalo – 2/1 4.4 – 2/2 8.2 Total = 12.6
Albany – 2/1 Trace – 2/2 11.9 Total = 11.9
Binghamton – 2/1 1.9 – 2/2 8.8 Total = 10.7
Syracuse – 2/1 1.2 – 2/2 8.8 Total = 10.0
Rochester – 2/1 2.3 – 2/2 6.1 Total = 8.4

I don’t see Rochester hanging at the bottom of the snow hill for too long. The snow contest is still close enough and it would only take a snowflake over 5 inches for Rochester to sled into second place. First place will take a whole lot more with the lead that Buffalo has right now. All in all it’s still a close snow race with plenty of time left in the snow season for any of the cities to win. Yes, even Albany 😉

Buffalo Has Lead NY Snow Contest Almost From Start of Season

OK, I don’t know if season summary so far makes any sense but hopefully by now you are all use to my great grammar in my posts. Hey, I do try and By the way I do read the emails I get once in awhile from some of you correcting me and I don’t just blow them off 😉

Buffalo continues to lead the Golden Snowball contest and keeps adding to their snow lead over the rest of the cities. Buffalo has held the lead since around 11/17.2014  As of the last update Buffalo leads the next best city and defending snow champs Syracuse by 12.8 inches. It’s looking like all of the cities in the Golden Snowball Contest will be seeing some snow the next few days and hopefully longer 😉 The biggest problem the cities have been haing is that when they get some snow Buffalo gets just a little more and most of the time it’s just tenths of an inch of snow but it keeps adding to their lead…

I was curious so I just took a look back to see how long Buffalo has held the lead this season. I also wanted to see if there were any other leaders in the snow contest (Short Memory) and here is how the snow contest has played out so far.

* Around 11/8/2014 Binghamton was in first place and was the city that started off the 2014 – 2015 snow season for the Golden Snowball Award with 0.2 inches of snowfall. WTG Binghamton 🙂

Buffalo was almost 14 inches ahead of Last seasons snow champs Syracuse but the snow lead has melted away this past week just a little bit. Rochester has managed to slip past Binghamton, NY and is now if the 3rd slot on the snow hill with Binghamton right behind both Syracuse and Rochester. Will Buffalo and Rochester’s snow slow down when Lake Erie freezes over? Beats me, lol 🙂

See Lake Erie Ice Cover Pictures Below – There is still a lot of talk going on about Lake Erie getting ready to completely freeze over and at last check it is pretty close to doing just that. I think the question is will that slow down Buffalo and Rochester at all. I’m still thinking how fast Lake Erie froze over last season and how Buffalo managed to keep adding to their snow totals even after the lake was frozen. One explanation was posted in a comment and I’ll share it here. Here is a comment from Bryan W. on the National Snow Site, The Golden Snow Globe:

“There can still be lake effect from effects of friction off the ice, any open water from cracks that open in the fluctuating ice fields, and moisture transport through the ice in areas where ice isn’t real thick. There have been some good lake effect storms even w/ ice cover, but overall nowhere near what occurs w/ open water.Lake effect off Ontario never really slows down until the sun angle gets high enough in mid to late February (which only provides brief disruptions to the bands in the afternoon hours).”.

There is still a lot of snow season left and it will be interesting to see how he second half of the 2014 – 2015 snow season plays out. Buffalo has a pretty good lead right now and the obvious question is can they hold onto it this season? The other question is can Rochester, Syracuse or Binghamton even start their snow season up in the Golden Snowball Contest. I don’t think that they want to wait too long. Stay Tuned, it’s sure to get more interesting than it’s been 😉
