OK, I know Buffalo and Rochester still trail Syracuse by 20 plus inches of snow this season but it looks like Buffalo may be closing the snow gap come the next update. I’m not sure about Rochester though.

Syracuse should be adding a little to their snow totals when the evening update is posted by the National Weather Service but I have a feeling Buffalo will be adding a lot more. I took a peek at the radar this morning before I headed to bed and it looked like some decent Lake Effect snow was just getting ready to head into Buffalo. I’m not sure how long it lasted but it looked like a decent snow band.

I’m looking at the radar right now and it looks like another band of Lake Effect is getting ready to drop down into Buffalo again. It should be interesting to see if Buffalo can get enough snow to make the snow contest close again. Let’s face it, it’s just not as much fun unless there is a snowball fight going on at the top of the snow hill.

All of the cities continue to be wayyy behind what their average snowfall to date should be right now. All of the cities are also way behind what they had at this time last season which the numbers above show. Luckily there is a lot of time left in the 2015-2016 snow season and I’m sure that makes everyone happy πŸ™‚ Stay Tuned for another update a little later and try to stay warm.

Have an Awesome Day!

First as always I want to give a Big thanks to Christopher A. for taking the time to make a donation to the snow site. It helps out more than I can express Christopher, Thank You πŸ™‚

Of course, I am joking about the snow contest being canceled due to lack of snow this season but Wow, it’s kind of tough to have a snow contest when there isn’t a whole lot of snow falling in the cities that are in the Golden Snowball contest. I already did one snow dance this season which didn’t work πŸ™ I guess El Nino is a little more powerful that my snow dances. I do still have one left, maybe two but I think I will save them seeing how it looks like warmer air will be moving into The CNY/Western NY area soon from what I have been reading.

As I mentioned in a previous post, sorry for the lack of blogging but there really isn’t a lot to blog about. I suppose I could blog about my personal life but that’s more boring than this season’s snow contest is so that won’t work. How boring is the snow contest? Below are some snow totals comparing this season’s snow for all of the cities so far to date and what the normal snowfall should be for this time in the season and also the difference between the 2014-2015 snow season and this season, 2015-2016.

Syracuse right now has a deficit of -32.4 inches of snow compared to what they should have right now. On a good note, Syracuse is only minus 1.4 inches of snow compared to this time last season. In other words, there is still some hope in saving this season because Syracuse did get it going last season and finished the 2014-2015 snow season with 119.7 inches πŸ™‚ Just under what their seasonal snow totals should be on average which is 123.8.

Buffalo which is in second place right now and trailing Syracuse by around 15 inches of snow this last update is -33.3 inches behind where they should be for this time in the snow season on average. Compared to last season Buffalo is -28.4 inches behind what they had at this time last season. Luckily the lakes are still open for business as far as cranking out some lake effect snowfall. Just need to keep the cold air around and get a little shift in the winds compared to how they have been. One good storm and Buffalo catches up as long as it misses the other cities.

Rochester, like all of the Golden Snowball cities is also way behind what their normal snowfall should be at this time in the season. Rochester has a snow deficit of -32.3 inches of snow compared to what their normal snowfall should be at this time. Last season Rochester had 40.7 inches of snow to date compared to only 22.5 inches so far for a deficit of -18.2 inches so far this season.

Binghamton has -31.3 inches less snow this season to date than what they normally should have. Of course we all know there is no such thing as normal when it comes to snow in NY πŸ™‚ Binghamton has -26.4 inches less snow at this time compared to last season.

Then there is Albany, enough said πŸ˜› OK, Albany is behind 27.6 inches compared to what they average for this time in the snow season and Albany has -31.9 inches less snow this season compared to last season to date.

It’s been a pretty weird, boring snow season so far as far as the Golden Snowball contest goes to say the least. Like I mentioned, the lakes are still open for business, the lake effect snow machines just waiting to crank up. Maybe I should change the snow dance to an Artic Air dance πŸ˜‰

Have a Great Day Everyone πŸ˜‰

Buffalo has been closing in on Syracuse the last few days but looking at the radar right now and the snow falling it looks like it may be advantage Syracuse. A lake effect snow band has been hitting Syracuse off and on while it looks like the snow band off of Lake Erie has been hanging to the south of Buffalo. Who is getting snow right now?

It also looks like The Roc is getting some snow from a decent snow band around the Rochester area right now. It will be interesting to see if Rochester can catch up a little with the snow that is falling and expected to fall there today and tomorrow.

Syracuse and Buffalo both finally hit the two feet of snow mark yesterday and it’s still hard to believe that it didn’t happen this season until January 17th. All 5 of the Golden Snowball cities are still well behind their average snow totals for this time in the season but today’s snow could change that for a couple of the cities.

Rochester and Binghamton have been quiet so far this season but from reading around and looking at the radar it looks like Rochester is going to tap into some decent lake effect snow also if they haven’t already. Rochester and Binghamton are both under a foot of snow for the season as of the last update which doesn’t include the overnight snow. Then there is Albany, enough said πŸ˜‰

Keep checking your local forecasts for today and tomorrow because the National Weather Service has several watches and warnings out for some of the cities. Syracuse is under a Lake Effect Snow Warning until January 19, 07:00 PM EST.

Rochester is under a Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect from January 18, 07:00 AM EST until January 19, 07:00 PM EST.

A Big Thank You to John F. for your recent donation to the snow site. As always, your donations help offset some costs and time spent on the snow site. Thanks John πŸ™‚

Stay tuned for another update when the new snow stats come out a little bit later today. No doubt it will be interesting to see what the cities have gotten so far πŸ™‚

Updated 1/12 7:00 PM – As expected from the earlier post, Buffalo has broken the tie between they had with Syracuse as of this last update. Buffalo has passed Syracuse to sit alone at the top of the Golden Snowball Hill. WTG Buffalo!

Below are the snow totals so far for today as of 4:00 to 5:00 PM from the National Weather Service:

Buffalo – 1.3 inches
Binghamton – 0.7
Syracuse – 0.2 inches
Rochester – 0.2
Albany – Not Reporting as Normal πŸ™

No doubt there is a lot of snow left to come down in the next 24 hours. It’s going to be interesting to see which city come out on top so stay tuned and take it slow on the roads folks πŸ˜‰

1/12 1:00 PM – OK, I think the word the phrase “sleds into first” is overdoing it a bit but Buffalo is now in a tie with Syracuse in the snow contest. Buffalo added 2.2 inches of new snow yesterday to share the top spot with Syracuse on the Golden Snowball snow mountain. WTG Buffalo πŸ™‚

I think the tie between Buffalo and Syracuse will be short lived though. I’ve been looking around and seeing some pictures of some whiteouts in Buffalo just a little while ago. I’m guessing come the early evening update a little bit later Buffalo will probably own the top of the snow hill. It will be interesting to see if Rochester or Syracuse can keep up but I don’t think they will this round anyways.

Come the end of tomorrow from what I have been reading, I think it’s anyone’s guess as to which city will be in 1st place. Most likely it will be either Buffalo, Rochester or Syracuse. Below are some links to the NWS site that has the latest weather for you city. Remember, I am clueless and just pretend to know what I am talking about. Always check with the Pros for your latest weather forecasts πŸ˜‰

So far there hasn’t been a lot going on other than light snow in Binghamton and you can stay up to date on Binghamton at the Binghamton Weather Statements and Warnings For Albany check out The National Weather Service for Albany here.

I know I haven’t been blogging much this season but lets face it, this snow season has been pretty boring and there really hasn’t been much to talk about until this week. I suppose I could blog about my personal life but Trust Me, that’s more boring than the snow season has been.

The National snow contest has been going pretty strong and it will be interesting to see if any of the NY cities can break into the top 25 this week. You can check out the Golden Snow Globe National Snow Contest Here!

Have a Great Day Eveyone and drive safe. See Snow – Drive Slow πŸ˜‰

Syracuse’s Latest Date in Season Without an Inch of Snow

According to CNY Central and Molly Matott this is the latest that Syracuse, New York has gone in a season without receiving at least an inch of snow. The previous record was tied yesterday, December 18th which was set in 1998 and broken today December 19th with the National Weather Service still only reporting 0.8 inches of snow for Syracuse this season. WTG Syracuse, now stop it and let’s get the lake effect machine cranking while we finally have some cold air around.

Buffalo’s Longest Latest Snowless Streak Comes To an End

It didn’t come to an end with a big bang, but Buffalo’s streak of the latest they have received measurable snowfall in a season has ended. It ended yesterday, 12/18 when Buffalo received a tenth of an inch of snow. Pretty much just a dusting but a measurable dusting of snow and that is what Buffalo’s snow totals as of the last update are so far this season, 0.1. Buffalo blew away the previous record by over two weeks which was set wayyy back on December 3rd, 1899 for the latest measurable snowfall at the airport. WTG Buffalo πŸ˜‰ I’m really not liking this trend at all BTW πŸ™

This Season’s Snow Compared to Normal and Last Season

Taking an idea (stealing, shhh) from an article I read by Glenn Coin from the Post Standard I added up some snow totals and keep in mind my fuzzy math πŸ˜‰ I totaled up all of the snow that the Golden Snowball cities have received so far this season and compared them to what the normal totals should be and also to what all of the cities had this time last season. I’m pretty sure that none of you in Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton or Albany are complaining about too much snow this season or how cold it’s been. I’m pretty sure the folks with snowmobiles, skiers and those of you that ice fish and plow probably are though and should be..

All Cities Combined Snow Totals

This Snow Season – 3.2 Inches of Snow (Really)

Normal Snow Season – 96.9 Inches of Snow

Last Season (2014-2015) – 128.2 (WOW)

Prety wild isn’t it? Enjoy it while you can because I’m pretty sure it won’t last thru the season. Then again, ya never know! Have a Great Weekend Everyone πŸ™‚

WTG Buffalo on receiving now measurable snow so far this season breaking the old record for no snow this late in the season. Keep it up Buffalo πŸ˜‰

Buffalo National Weather Service Statement – “It’s official, Buffalo has set a new record for the latest measurable snow. The previous record was December 3rd, set back in 1899. We will continue to add to this record for many days to come, with no cold or snow expected for at least the next 10 days. Here is the 6-10 day forecast, showing very high chances for above normal temperatures to last for much of the nation through the middle of December.”.

As of the last update, all of the Golden Snowball cities are behind what the average snowfall totals should be and WAY behind what we all had at this time last season. From reading around, it looks like the snow may hold off through at least the next couple of weeks butttt… A snow dance is in the works so that will probably change πŸ˜‰

Have a Great night everyone!
