winter storm

10:00 AM Wednesday – So far a dud here in the Syracuse area but some of the other cities are getting some snow and from the sounds of things the storm isn’t over yet. Here is what the National Weather Service is reporting for yesterday and I believe this doesn’t include the overnight snow which will come out later. Syracuse ended up getting a lot of rain rather than snow. Look for another update as the snow stats come in.

Rochester – 3.6
Binghamton – 3.2
Buffalo – 2.5
Albany – 1.7
Syracuse – 0.7

12:16 am Wednesday 11/27/13 – Just a heads up that I’ll probably just keep updating this post as to what’s going on. So far tonight for the last couple of hours it’s been just rain with a mix of sleet every now and then in the Syracuse area. More to come in the morning 😉

It’s starting to look more and more like the storm they have been talking about is going to actually pan out.  They were thinking several days ago that it may have stayed more toward the coast but it is on more of an inland track now and the chances are that at least a few of the Golden Snowball cities will get a decent amount of snow from this storm.  I’m starting to think that Rochester is going to be the King Snowman for this storm and perhaps so far this season.

OK, does anyone have any estimates for this storm?  Let’s say from the start to finish and we’ll call the finish date Thursday at 11:59 PM just in case some lake effect snow gets drawn into the cities when this pulls out..  The normal prize will be a lot of Notta as in Notta Thing other than a virtual pat on the back for calling it right.  The person closests to the snow total for all of the cities snow added up wins.  My guesstimate is below and you can post yours in the comments section anytime before midnight tonight, Tuesday.

Rochester – 13.5
Syracuse – 9.0
Buffalo – 7.0
Binghamton – 3.5
Albany – 2
TOTAL = 35 inches 🙂

Thanksgiving Storm 11/27 10:15 am

Picture Around 10:00 AM Today, Wednesday

Normally I love a good storm but I really do wish or hope that they don’t happen during the holiday travel times.  Unfortunately this storm most likely will effect quite a few people that will be traveling on Wednesday for the Thanksgiving holiday.  For those of you traveling take it slow and have a safe trip.  I know I’ll be worrying about a few of my family members who will be traveling.  Take it slow and be prepared 😉

I finally woke up this morning to see some of that white fluffy gold in the sky falling and even sticking to the ground a bit. I figured a couple tenths of an inch where I live which is just outside of the city of Syracuse and not too far from the airport where they measure the snowfall for Da’Cuse. It also looked like it was snowing down toward Binghamton’s way so there is a good chance that we may have Liftoff for the new 2013 – 2014 snow season. The question now is which city/cities started it up this season?

How about Rochester or Buffalo? Any snow to report there today? From what I have been reading it’s suppose to be a cold winter this year which could mean some decent Lake Effect Snow for some of us. I’ll post an update later this afternoon or evening when NOAA posts the new stats from earlier today. Remember, ALL of the stats are courtesy of the national weather service and to this day it still amazes me how much info they have on their website.

On one other note there is a rumor going around about a big storm come the end of next week. After reading around about that it seems that right now it’s WAYYYY to far for the pros to predict but if everything falls in place perfectly it is a possibility that it just may pan out. Chances are they won’t be able to pin it down until some time next week so I wouldn’t worry about it just yet or is that I wouldn’t get excited about the Nor’easter just yet 😉

Have an Awesome Day All 😉

Another quick update – The Syracuse snow stats were just posted a little while ago.  They are showing 7.9 for today bringing their 2 day storm totals to 12.5 inches of new snowfall.  The chart is as up to date as the National Weather Service is now 😉

Updated 12/27 – The new snow stats were just posted with the exception of Syracuse which is showing MM meaning the stats aren’t being reported yet.  Surprisingly there were no changes in the lineup and the totals although pretty decent were a little lower than I expected them to be.  Here at my house east of the city of Syracuse I measured 13 inches of snow.  Buffalo took the honors with this snow storm picking up 12.3 inches of snow for the 2 days.  That is unless Syracuse can top it when an update for them comes out.  Here is the way it all played out the last 2 days and keep an eye on my fuzzy math 😉

Buffalo – 12.3 inches
Rochester – 11.1
Syracuse – 12.5
Albany – 7.8
Binghamton – 6.3

6:00 AM Update – I just updated the snow stats and they are from what has fallen as of yesterday so far.  No doubt this has been a decent storm because I can tell by how many cars come into the yard taking the turn 🙂 2 so far for this storm with the last one being about an hour ago.  One was able to get out on her own and the other one was buried pretty good so we were able to get him shoveled out about 4 am.  Time for a nap and it will be interesting when the next update comes out. So as of the end of yesterday the storm totals are and don’t let them fool ya just yet, many more inches to be added to some of the cities 😉  Good Night

Buffalo – 10.1
Rochester – 8.5 Record
Binghamton – 5.1
Syracuse – 4.6
Albany – 2.9

10:30 PM Update –  As of right now Syracuse and Binghamton are the only cities that have updates out thanks to the Binghamton NOAA station.  Buffalo and The Rock normally come out around 2:00 am give or take so you may not see them posted until tomorrow.  Right now Binghamton is showing 4.1 and Syracuse is reporting 3.8 as of 10 PM for this snow storm.  Any Guesstimates as to which city will have the highest totals for this storm?  I’m going with –

Rochester – 15.5
Syracuse – 13.0
Buffalo – 11.5
Binghamton – 11.0
Albany – 8.5

Winter storm warnings are / will be in effect for all of the Golden Snowball cities so if you need to travel you should do it early.  From reading around at the National weather service most of the heavy snow won’t be starting until later on for some of the cities.

Most of the forecasts are calling for at least a 8 – 14+ inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow afternoon.  They are also saying we can expect 2 – 3 inches an hour at times which is a lot of snow coming down and normally will stop traffic.  In other words as much as we are use to the snow you should stay off the roads for this storm.  Keep an eye on your favorite news channel for changing conditions and take it slow.  Below are links that will get updated by the National Weather Service as the snow storm gets closer.

Warnings for the Buffalo and Rochester Areas

Warnings for the Syracuse, Utica and Binghamton Areas

Warnings for the Albany and Surrounding Areas

Have a Great Day Everyone and Stay Safe 😉

Updated 4/23 11:00 PM – Well it turned out to be a bust so far for the GSB cities but a couple of records were broken.  Rochester is reporting 2.6 inches breaking the old record of 0.8 set in 1956.  Buffalo tied their date record going all the way back to 1927 with 0.8 inches.  Could be a little bit left in the air but, but ummm, go Rochester 🙂

Remember it’s not over til the fat man sings and I’m not singing yet.  I do have a pretty good humming going on right now though 😉

Update 4/23 12:30 pm – No new stats to report from NOAA (the National Weather Service) yet.  Just a trace for a couple of the cities as of yesterday.  They will come out a little bit later this afternoon and I’ll update them when NOAA has an update.  Here in Syracuse or at least around my house nothing to report.  Any ideas on snow in Buffalo, Rochester and Maybe Bingo?  Stay tuned 🙂

With just about 7 days left before the contest ends Rochester might have to worry about this storm that is suppose to hit in the wee hours and go into perhaps Tuesday.  Stop the parade!

So far from what I have been watching Buffalo is looking to gain the most out of this storm.  Depending on how you look at it that is.  The higher elevations should be getting a good dumping of (unfortunetly) the wet heavy white gold.  Chances are Rochester will get enough themselves to hold off this late season charge but it should be interesting.  Syracuse from what I’m hearing anyways, is suppose to get mainly rain and a lot of it. Let’s just hope there isn’t a mess with trees down and power outages.  If you have time drop us a comment as to how things are going in your neck of the woods 🙂
